This is a review for Cold Serial: The Jack the Strangler Murders by Brian Forschner. Each chapter of this book focuses on a different girl, each one being in their early teens. Each chapter starts off talking about their family and home life. Each chapter then leads to them going missing and being found either a few hours or a few days later. The rest of each chapter then consists of investigating the crime committed against each girl.

I'm going to rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. Reading about this crime happening to several different girls was hard for me, but I was able to read the book all the way to the end. I was surprised at the people who were suspected of murdering each girl and were arrested. I ended up reading to the end of the chapter hoping that they would be proven innocent. I have read a lot about rape culture and was infuriated that these girls were not just being murdered but raped as well.

The only thing I disliked about this book was that each chapter was WAY too long. Each chapter could have been split up into two chapters, maybe even three. I had no problem reading through each chapter up until each girl was found after going missing. After that, the rest of the chapter started to drag on. Despite this, I think this book deserves a rating of four stars.

I say that this book was well edited. I particularly noticed the dialogue of a person of color. The grammar and spelling were purposely written as if to show that person's lack of education. As mentioned above, the chapters could have been a lot shorter. Each chapter was dedicated to the girl that ended up being the victim of the crime. Instead of one twenty page chapter for each girl, maybe each girl could have had their own section which consisted of two or three chapters.

I was a bit surprised that every girl was already working. Of course, the book was written for a time period where young teenagers were mainly looking for work. The chapters suggested that finishing elementary school and going off to get a job is equivalent to today's teenagers graduating high school and either getting a job or going off to college. Reading about sexual assault intrigues but also infuriates me because of how there are men who have no problem violating women. Of course, nowadays women are just as capable of sexual assault as men are. But in this book, and most likely during that time period, it was mainly men assaulting women. If reading about sexual assault doesn't bother or trigger you too much, you may also enjoy this book.
