When a rapper and a med student are both killed by an injection of the rabies virus, police begin to pursue Dr. Cofield, who is rumored to have been having an affair with the student. Detective Aisha Sawyer is assigned to the case and she thinks that the police are pursuing the wrong suspect. Sawyer is convinced that the rapper’s ex-lover, Chosen, is the culprit. Sawyer’s partner is following other leads, but Sawyer believes that Chosen is guilty. All she needs to uncover is the motive, and the murder weapon used to inject the virus. When more bodies are discovered, Sawyer is determined to crack the case before it is too late.
Karma Wears Versace by Rod Palmer is an action-packed story with an exciting plot, combining crime, lust and a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase. The author had me sitting on the edge of my seat from beginning to end with his strong character development and fast-paced plot.
My favorite part of this exciting story was the author’s ability to capture the emotions of his characters and paint a picture with words. For example, regarding heartbreak and rejection, he wrote, “The comment was small, but the damage cataclysmic. Shards of his broken heart were floating in his chest like satellite debris.” The way the words are strung together allows the reader to feel the character’s anguish.
I love how Aisha’s character was portrayed as a fierce and no-nonsense detective. In a male-dominated career, she held her own as she dealt with sexist attitudes from some of her co-workers. For no reason other than being a woman, Aisha was quickly pegged as emotional and irrational by her partner and had to work hard to prove she was capable.
Karma Wears Versace flowed together flawlessly, and the plot twists were appropriately paced. Although new characters were often introduced, they all served a purpose, and no stone was left unturned.
As much as I loved this book, the thing I least liked was the number of spelling and grammatical errors. I think this book could quickly secure a perfect score with another round of editing. I chose to give Karma Wears Versace a rating of 3 out of 4 stars.
I would recommend this book to anybody who loves psychological thrillers. Readers will think they have the story figured out but will be proven wrong by the various twists and turns. I would also recommend Karma Wears Versace to readers that are looking for some romance thrown into the mix. With this group of fiery characters, the book is laden with steamy romantic scenes and surprising couplings. This book is not intended for younger readers as it contains some explicit sex scenes and language some may find offensive.
