The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare revolves around the actions of Neiman. Neiman, as he/she chooses to identify on the Dark Web, is a psychopathic serial killer who claims that the vicious crimes committed are, in fact, serving justice to individuals who have wronged him/her in the past with impunity. Through these blogs, Neiman explores the notions of justice, vengeance, hate, and satisfaction while claiming emotional detachment from the murders. Clever and intelligent, Neiman's blog illustrates the horrid details of each crime after the fact, keeping just one step ahead of the police. After the first murder, the detectives are on the case, and as the bodies begin to pile up, they are left scrambling to make connections between victims and tie up loose ends in order to prevent one last murder.

I give The Dark Web Murders 4 out of 4 stars. This is the most enjoyable read I have had in a while. It drew me in early and kept me wondering to the end. What I loved about this book was that O'Hare led me to think one thing, and then the plot twisted, and the facts turned out to be totally different from what I had imagined. Then, his skillful use of dramatic irony let me piece some things together and left me on the edge of my seat wondering when the detectives would catch up. What I loved even more was Neiman and the blogs. The discussions of justice, vengeance, hate, and satisfaction contained therein were thought-provoking and made me want to get to know the blogger more, which was terrifying because it became quickly apparent that the blogger was a very bad person. These blogs gave the reader a little peek inside the mind of a cold-blooded killer. It was enough to make me wonder if there isn't a dark side to each of us.

Ironically, the thing I liked least about the book was Neiman. The killer's thoughts and actions were so crazy and twisted, and that left me with a disturbed, sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I have to admit that it almost made me put the book down, but not quite. The graphic detail with which each murder is described and the suffering of each victim made me wonder a little about what was going on in the mind of the writer; however, without Neiman's diabolical scheming, there would be no book, so hats off to O'Hare and his lurid imagination.

This book will appeal to all crime drama fans and even to fans of horror, thriller, or "slasher" fiction due to the intense nature and brutality of the crimes depicted. Fans of suspense will love the fast pace of the action that makes readers unable to put the book down because they have this need to find out what happens next. I do not, however, recommend this book to the faint of heart or the weak of stomach. The Dark Web Murders is not at all for the squeamish.

I highly recommend The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare but would like to leave one caveat for the American reader. Since the author is British, some English words appear in the text that may be unfamiliar; however, this does not detract at all from the story, and context clues usually make those words decipherable. I definitely would not hesitate to pick up another book by Brian O'Hare. All in all, I can't say enough about this book. It was simply a splendid read.
