The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is an insanely captivating suspense-filled novel. The suspense and the way the story unfolds will enthrall the readers. This is the first book in The Inspector Sheehan Murder series that I have read and I can’t wait to go and read the previous ones.

Is there anything scarier than a murderer documenting every aspect of the murder and that too on a blog of all places? Yes, there is. The murderer, who refers to himself as Nemein, is more meticulous than most criminals, is very intelligent and well-read which makes him even more dangerous. No one could have predicted who the murderer really was. Well, no one except for Jim Sheehan, the Chief Inspector.

Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan along with his team of detectives was assigned to investigate multiple gruesome murders, all following the same M.O. The story was well-developed, a little slow in the beginning but its slowness in no way acts as a deterrent. It just gives us a better idea of the things going on in the heads of the characters. The mystery was solved realistically and all the clues were explained very well making it possible for the readers to keep up. I loved how Sheehan’s brain worked and how he deciphered clues, analyzing them in ways that no one else could.

The way the entire team got together to analyze every aspect of the murder was amazing. Although, all the teams were good, I particularly loved McCullough and McBride’s partnership and Sheehan and Stewart were definitely the highlight of the book. They complimented each other really well. Also, Sheehan’s inner monologues were very interesting and at times funny. The list of suspects was long and became a bit hard to keep track of after a while but the fact that Brian O’Hare provided a glossary of sorts of all the characters in the beginning of the book proved to be helpful.

It was difficult to establish a connection between the prologue and the rest of the story until the 70 percent mark but after that the reader will start to get an inkling of the connection. Doctor Campbell was a smart character and I would love to read more about him. I loved the dynamic between both Sheehan and his team and Sheehan and his wife Margaret. Also, Allen and Stewart’s relationship was really sweet. The last 100 or so pages of the book left me with a variety of thoughts in my head ranging from “Oh my god, what?!” to “Please do something” and finally to “No!”

It was an intriguing story that made it very difficult to put the book down. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The storyline and the characters more than compensate for any minor issues. This book was well-edited and I would recommend this to every single mystery lover. Brilliant job done by Brian O’Hare!
