Final Notice is an excellent novel with both a fresh plot and a depth of background. I don't hesitate to grade it 4 out of 4 because of those two points.
The idea of what a person would do if he/she knew that death was only days away is intriguing. There was a nice variety of personal stories that rang true to me. After a lifetime of ICU/ER and psychiatric nursing, I'm still amazed at how people will react so differently to the same situation. And, even I, with my mother earth tendencies, felt motivated to consider the idea of a violent exit and its possible advantages. Who? How? Why?
The author took a further step to examine the motivation of the device's inventors that fueled its creation. While our technology and medical science cannot duplicate the device in reality, I found it to follow the tradition of science fiction's method of saying what if? in an excellent way.
The author provided enough business, legal, and medical processes that while truncated gave a satisfying depth to the story. This aspect is often missing in current novels. I found the timeline for device approval to be very abbreviated, but it did heighten the tension of the story. The author obviously did considerable research while writing his story. His attention to detail is admirable.
I have already heartily recommended it to many people and used the core as a take-off point for several spirited dinner conversations.
