B-Side by Janis Jones is about a police officer named Mara and her girlfriend Casey who gets severely beaten in a suspected hate crime. The police officer’s partner Derek, who happens to be attracted to her, helps to work the case. When her partner suggests that evidence points to the attack being personal, she considers asking Casey if she remembers anything about the attack. Before she can do this, a lead presents itself to her. Mara takes things into her own hands to solve the case once she learns that some of her colleagues who are also working on it have not bothered to follow-up on potential evidence. New clues lead to more clues and bring her closer to justice, unexpected findings, and twists.

What I like most about this book is Jones’ straight forward approach to introducing characters and describing the scene. It is easy to imagine things and get into the story. From the first page, the writing quickly grabs your attention and causes you to keep reading. The author’s description of events and dialogue is so detailed that I can clearly visualize everything as it is happening. As I read (and reread) the story, I must remind myself that I am only reading what is happening, not actually witnessing it! Although the story has action and suspense, there is a touch of romance as Mara’s love grows deeper for her girlfriend throughout the ordeal. I love books with action in them, but a little romance thrown into the story does not bother me, even if it is not a situation that I can particularly relate to.

What I dislike most about the story is that someone gets brutally beaten and the use of derogatory terms, but that did not stop me from continuing to read the book. I am glad that I finished it.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is a suspenseful and interesting story. The detailing of characters and their dialogue is skillfully written. It is a page-turner, and I would like to read more from this author. The book is also well-edited.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy a detailed and suspenseful story that you will want to read repeatedly. If you like books that mention the police force and military, you may like this book as well. I do not recommend this book to anyone who prefers not to read about same sex relationships, the use of profanity, or stories that jump around to different moments in time.
