"No body. No crime. No conviction." That's what the three friends- Peter Simpson, Allister Brown and Sarah Parker believed. They planned to set up a crime scene suggesting Peter Simpson murdered Allister Brown and let Simpson go on trial, only to have Brown enter the court room proving Simpson innocent. But things didn't go as intended. Brown never showed up and Peter is executed for a murder he did not commit.
An Imperfect Crime: A Detective Sanchez/Father Montero Mystery by Fred G. Baker is a murder mystery with no murder to begin with. The desperation and helplessness in Peter Simpson's voice just before his execution made Father Montero take the responsibility to prove Simpson's innocence and find out what actually happened to Brown and Parker. With Detective Sanchez in the team, who too thought Peter was innocent, the duo went ahead to solve the mystery of "The Perfect Crime." While looking for Brown and Parker, Detective Sanchez is also investigating gang operations concerning drugs, gunrunning, prostitution and human trafficking.
The story is based in Phoenix, Arizona, taking us to Mexico, Berkeley and San Francisco following the long trail of leads, with each location described impeccably. It incorporates the interesting flavours of trust, deceit, jealousy and friendship. We see Father Montero and Detective Sanchez's progressing friendship which had a trial of its own towards the end. Detective Sanchez became my favourite character as the story progressed. She is hard working and dedicated to her profession. Nothing is too much for her. I admire the courage with which she enters in a gun fight alone. I also liked Father Montero's commitment and determination to the Simpson case and his strong will. "A promise made is a debt unpaid." Together Father Montero and Detective Sanchez make a team you want to see again and again.
I didn't find anything that I immensely disliked. I appreciate the writing style of the author and loved how meticulous he has been with the details. The suspense was built throughout the story and it was engaging and flowing from start to end. I couldn't find any dull spot in all respects which is why I would rate the novel 4 out of 4. The action scenes and interrogations were very well formulated. I didn't find any verbose elements that made the story even more alluring.
There were some mild profanities I found but it was acceptable since the story involved gang operations and interrogations with gang members. With remarkable attention to details and evidence, the novel is a good read for the crime and mystery enthusiasts out there. By the end it leaves you asking "Till what extent can you go for fame?"
