If a gripping crime novel full of gore and ruthlessness is your forte, look no further for your next book to devour! Brian O'Hare has pulled out all the stops to provide the reader an inside look at a serial killer and some of the behind-the-scenes actions detectives take to find killers.
Nemein, or so he is hailed on the Dark Web, is a serial killer and sociopath who writes a blog about his killings. Recounting them in such minute detail, readers get to relive his actions through his writings.
Chief Inspector Sheenan and his team scramble to apprehend the killer but are hit with lots of dead ends. Exposing big-name members of society in the process, the murderer tries to justify all the madness by announcing he is detached from the actual killings. "And that is why I have appointed myself the agent of tangible Justice, the righter of wrongs, the one who sees beyond the immediate." Being very articulate, the psychopath writes to present his audience with his side of reasoning.
When the blogs ultimately are found and deciphered, time is of the essence before Nemein kills again. Will the detectives be clever enough to uncover him before it's too late? Who is Nemein, the vigilante of justice?
The Dark Web Murders is a gripping tale that will force you to hold your breath in places and cringe at others. I stayed up late at night, trying to read what would happen next. It was a very fast-paced read and compelled me to guess all throughout who the killer was. The ending was extremely well written to tie up all the loose ends that had readers seeking why.
The thing I liked most about this book was the characters. They were thoroughly developed, and even though this was the fourth book in the series, I did not need to read the others to comprehend what was going on. One of the detectives that I favored, McNeill, has a stutter that is incurable. I have someone in my family with this speech impediment and felt linked to him. It shows that even with the disability, he can nonetheless carry out extensive work.
The author proposes a list at the beginning of the characters in the book. Lists, like his, can help readers out substantially. There were many characters involved and I was content to utilize that, especially since I hadn't read the other books in the series. Once I got involved in the book, I connected with the characters and could identify them. O'Hare additionally included UK police terminology, so that anyone needing help with the abbreviations could still follow the story.
I honestly did not encounter anything I disliked about this book. If I had to be nit-picky, the author would frequently use words that I am unfamiliar with, and subsequently, had to use the dictionary button often. This helps to expand my vocabulary however, so it isn't necessarily a harsh thing.
I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. There were a few typographical errors. I wouldn't have detected them if not looking, as it did not disrupt the flow of the book. An example of this is the use of The Club. It is sometimes italicized, put in quotation marks and at the end, was just capitalized. I felt this was a thought out plot, with substantial characters, and it deserved all the stars to remain even with these few errors.
I would recommend this to anyone who reads crime, thriller, or police-procedure fiction. It is not for the faint-hearted, however, as it contains how the killings happened in detail. Reader discretion is advised due to some intense trigger scenes that include killing a dog by a poison, child abuse, rape, kidnapping, BDSM, and even human sacrifices. It is quite a dark novel, but for those that can stomach reading such things, I thoroughly recommend it.
