Arsenic and Old Men is part of the Mitch and Al murder mystery collection from the author Glenn Ickler. In this book, investigative journalist Mitch (Warren Mitchell), photographer Al (Alan Jeffrey) and cartoonist Dave Jerome leave Minnesota, along with their wives, for a short trip to the Island of Martha’s Vineyard. The main reason for the trip is so that Dave can sort out a few details of his recently deceased uncle’s estate, while his friends provide him with some moral and emotional support.

The last time that they were in Martha’s Vineyard, nine years before, the vacation turned into a battle with an armed killer and it seems that this time won’t be any less thrilling. There is a murder to solve when it is discovered that Dave’s uncle did not die of a heart attack as assumed, but rather from arsenic poisoning. When a second dead body turns up on the land inherited by Dave, the trio are considered suspects and their short holiday turns into another murder investigation.

I enjoyed this latest installment of the Mitch and Al mysteries, although I haven’t read any of the previous books. Perhaps, for that reason, it took me a little time to get into the book and familiarize myself with the characters. However, once I did, I found that the story flowed nicely and there was just the right amount of tension to keep me interested.

The book was very well edited and I liked Glenn Ickler’s style of writing, with great banter between the main characters, as well as with the inhabitants of Martha’s Vineyard. The book is really quite comical, with lots of puns (a type of humor that I appreciate) and play on words in the dialogue, which make the main characters, particularly Mitch, even more likeable.

My only complaints about this book are that I found the plot a little simple, it was all wrapped up just a little too quickly and easily, and I found some aspects a little repetitive, such as describing the kissy sounds that the main character and his wife do at the end of each phone call. I would have liked the book to have been little longer, but I guess that shows how much I was enjoying it. However, these small criticisms didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book and so give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars, and I would heartily recommend it to any mystery crime lover. I am looking forward to reading the previous Mitch and Al’s books, as well as joining them in any further adventures.
