The Alienation of Ludovic Weiss is a fictional book written by David Pollard. Ludovic Weiss is a lawyer and civil servant working in the compliance department. His life is peaceful until one day, in the office, when he receives a phone call from his director. His director arranges a clandestine meeting. During the meeting, the director gives him a secret assignment and a file. Weiss is not comfortable with the arrangement, and shortly after, events start occurring that seem real and unreal. Also, the file is missing. Is someone messing with Weiss’ head, or is he losing his mind?
Consisting of 151 pages, The Alienation of Ludovic Weiss is a unique mystery novel. It’s well written, and it flows smoothly. Being easy to read, it’s full of intrigue and suspense. Written in the third-person point of view, it comprises an unpredictable plot. From the beginning, the author unveils fascinating events, which kept me glued to the book because I really wanted to know why a lot of things were happening. Twists show up here and there, which make the tale weirder and more interesting, especially the ending.
The author relates the events as they start occurring from Monday morning through Thursday to timelessness. Though the book is easy to read, the ending needs deep concentration and racking of one’s brains to grasp it. I had to reread it before I could understand what really happened there. Therefore, the book is not for readers who don’t like puzzling stories. Anyway, for me, it’s a good read, and I enjoyed reading it. Exploring the themes of trust and betrayal, it has engrossing dialogues.
Regarding the characters, the author did not provide many details about them, but the few he gave are just enough to make a reader connect with them. Weiss, the protagonist, is a dedicated worker. Also, he is strict and obedient to authority and his superiors. Later on in the story, these attributes make him very vulnerable. Some of the supporting characters are quirky but interesting. Furthermore, the book does not consist of bad language, and there are no graphic sex scenes.
Lastly, I rate The Alienation of Ludovic Weiss 4 out of 4 stars. I couldn’t rate it lower because it’s interesting and captivating. It’s well narrated and a worthwhile read. In addition, it was professionally edited, though I noticed some grammar and typographical errors, particularly missing commas, which are not off-putting. I recommend it to readers who enjoy reading mystery novels.
