The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare closely follows a team of detectives in Northern Ireland as they pursue a murder via the “dark web”. Chief Inspector, Jim Sheehan, leads his team as they conduct investigative interviews and narrow down their list of suspects. The discovery of an exclusive, exotic sex club steers the investigative team down a road filled with violence, sex, and illegal activity. Alternating points-of-view between Inspector Sheehan and the Dark Web Murderer, readers are kept on the edge of their seat until the last page.
The part of this book that I disliked most was the cruel torture of a dog. As an animal lover at heart, this scene had me in tears, and I almost could not continue reading. Including this detail in the story does show how heartless and cold the killer is, but I still do not think it was necessary. The book would still be just as entrancing if the tortuous murder of the loving dog was left out. This aspect should be disclosed to readers in the beginning as it is so gruesomely described.
There were many aspects of this book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I thought it was great that Brian O’Hare listed the characters and a short description of each at the beginning of his book. With the way the point of view shifts from character to character and the high number of characters that play a role, it is helpful to be able to reference the list throughout the story. I enjoyed that each chapter was from a different character’s point of view. I thought it really added depth to the story and helps readers see it from every angle. Including the view of the murderer was an integral part of the story, as well. O’Hare did a great job of giving details about each murder from that point of view without leaking out any details of who the murderer actually is. The twist at the end truly caught me off guard, and I felt like I was right there in the moment with the characters.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. Even with the gruesome murder scene of the dog, I could not put this book down. While reading, I felt like my mind was all over the place with details and characters and that I was lost, but the author did an amazing job at the end of tying up all the loose ends and bringing the whole story together. The book did not just end after the climax. It was written very well in a way that does not leaves readers guessing about what actually happened. It is also clear that it was professionally edited in that there were few grammatical errors. Many words appear to be misspelled, but the author discloses in the beginning that he is British so many of the words are from the UK.
Anyone who loves a good murder mystery or a story with a twist would enjoy this book. I would suggest keeping the audience to adults only as there are many instances of profanity but more so due to the graphic nature of the sex club. The book does not go far into detail about the sex club, but it talks about it enough that I would not want my child or teenager exposed to it. The very first chapter of the book is almost a rape scene, so if that is a trigger to anyone, I would suggest they not read it either.
