Arsenic and Old Men: A Mitch and Al mystery by Glenn Ickler is a crime thriller, involving Mitch, Al, and their trusted friend Dave.

Mitch is an investigative journalist, Al a photographer for the same newspaper, and Dave a freelance cartoonist. The trio always seems to land right in the midst of one crime or another. When Dave’s wealthy Uncle Walt, dies of a heart attack and leaves him an inheritance, he invites Mitch and Al to accompany him to the expensive vacationer’s paradise, Martha’s Vineyard, for a weekend trip. What appears to be a tragic heart attack soon turns out to be a cold blooded murder, and they are once again landed right at the epicenter of another mystery. Things go further south when the detective pulls all stops to slow down progress, and refuse cooperation due to previous grudges while their prime suspect turns up a victim himself.

The book is very well written and the writer sticks to the plot. It’s full of silly, lame puns and dad jokes. The author is blunt and straightforward and doesn’t invest in anything that’s not relevant to the plot. There’s no useless romanticism. The waves are just waves and the weather is just fine, and not an allegory for any human emotion, which is a breath of fresh air. The sarcasm is a plus and the subtle mention of their previous adventure every now and then, piques your interest enough to read the rest of the series. The book is somewhat of a Nancy Drew for adults.

A couple of repetitive jokes do get a tad tedious, but it’s also somewhat foreshadowing of the next events. There’s not much to complain about. The plot is well constructed and the ending unpredictable. The story-line was easy to follow and I actually quite enjoyed reading it. This is one of the mystery authors who actually know what they are doing.

I would rate it a 4 out of 4 stars. The book is very well edited and has no errors. It is one of those books which make you a fan of the entire series. It’s fun, lighthearted, engaging, and still manages to throw light on some serious issues and shame ICE for their immorality, and mistreatment of immigrants.

The book is suitable for all young adults. While there are a couple of explicit, the book in itself is quite mellow. From Sherlock Holmes fans to any mystery lover will absolutely love this book. So the next time you look for something new and actually worth reading, look no further ‘cause here is an entire series to keep you busy.
