The book's title, The Mystery of Flight 2222, is somewhat misleading, and could be disappointing to serious mystery buffs. There are no mysterious crimes or complex romantic relationships to investigate in this book by Thomas Neviaser. However, the reader is quickly introduced to a game often enjoyed by Frank Mason, the main character, when he travels. After being seated next to Helen Hampton, an extremely nervous flyer, Frank explains the game to help Helen’s anxiety. Throughout the book there are several small mysteries/problems that need to be solved but the “real” mystery is unique and unexpected.
The events in the book detail the survival of eight passengers and a flight attendant after the crash of flight 2222, headed for Buenos Aires. The survivors consist of a variety of individuals that include: a stock analyst (Frank Mason), a floral shop owner (Helen Hampton), a retired Israeli special forces member (Irving Kaplan), an Irish tavern owner (Otto), a rude hippie-type fire bug (Homer), a Japanese honeymoon couple (Yuto and Soo-Mi), a retired piano teacher (Maxine) and the flight attendant (Kimberly). Throughout the book, the diverse personalities of the survivors and their challenges will keep the readers intrigued and engaged.
The adventure begins for each of the characters when they initially purchase their airline tickets. Not one of them was prepared for what was yet to come. The flight itself presented typical minor irritations, such as flying anxiety and an extremely rude and inconsiderate passenger. However, the true adventure begins once an unexpected engine problem arises that results in a traumatic and devastating crash. The nine survivors are thrust into a whirlwind of events that force them to work as a team while hoping for their rescue.
Between the weather, shark attacks, and food and water concerns, there is no shortage of action. The majority of their experiences are serious and could be life threatening. However, one element of humor does occur when fish flop into their raft, providing a temporary food source.
As a result of the author’s writing style, the flow from chapter to chapter is effortless. The characters are well developed, consistent, and interesting. Although the word “mystery” appears in the book’s title, there is also an interesting influence of elementary science fiction. This twist was unexpected but definitely interesting. The only occurrence that was somewhat disturbing was several acts of cannibalism that seemed necessary to the survivors’ existence. I believe readers ranging in age from the 30s to the 70s can enjoy The Mystery of Flight 2222. I give this book a rating of four out of four stars.
