Guilt by David Taylor Black is a thrilling island mystery where a writer must find the truth behind a murder before it is too late. But the mystery of the island is not the only one that haunts the main characters as flashes of his life before the island plague him. But all is not as dreary as it seems as there is definitely some romance in the air.

When reading Guilt, I really enjoyed how Black’s characters felt like real people. Their reactions to both their environment and each other were realistic and even humorous at times. I feel it is a sign of excellent writing when an author can create characters that feel like they have their own voice, which allows readers to not only better connect with the characters but also to make it easier to bring them alive inside the reader’s imagination.

I also really enjoyed the pacing and the way he revealed the killer. Writing a mystery is hard, since the author can’t reveal too much but they must also give the reader enough to keep them hooked continue reading the story. I believe that Black did an amazing job balancing what information he gave the reader and what information he saved for the big reveal towards the books climate. As a reader, I was just as in the dark about who the real killer was as the main character until it was revealed to him and thus me the reader.

In fact, this book was written so well that there isn’t anything that I dislike about it. The plot, characters, setting and theme were all woven together into a magnificent book that I think many adults, and even some young adults would get a thrill out of reading. What is even more amazing is that the book deals with adult themes yet contains no swear words. Admittedly the word “damned” does appear in the book, on page 20, but as part of a title that the character is referencing not as an exclamation.

I give Guilt by David Taylor Black 4 out of 4. Not only do I feel that Guilt is on par with works by James Patterson or J. A. Jance I think that Black is definitely on his way to becoming one of the next big name in mystery writing. Or romance writing if he so chooses. Guilt, according to Black, is supposed to be the first book to a series of mystery novels and I for one look forward to the day when I can review his second book.
