Mixed Blessings by J.M Muse is a book that seeks to show the racial tension present in the world, particularly the United States. Despite being a fictional story, it doesn’t fail to accurately depict the reality of the matter. In the book, we see violence and ridiculous acts encouraged by religious fanatics on the grounds of race. Such is the story of a man, Kublai Khan, who in an effort to dramatically increase the population of black people suggests that they leave their families and marry women of Asian descent solely for the purpose of bearing children with them after which they are to return to their families.

The move results in stiff resistance from members of a predominantly white society under the leadership of pastor Dalton. Subsequently, the two groups end up fighting and the violence is felt throughout the city of Los Angeles. Notably, the tension is majorly between the white and black communities while other races remain unscathed. However, with violence everywhere, the people quickly realize that it is a war with no winner. A young family in particular falls victim to this as the black man loses his multiracial wife as a result of the same.

In the book, the author sheds light on a very controversial issue. However, despite the complexity of the matter, he manages to show both sides of the story without bias. Apart from recognizing the existence of racism in the United States, he also shows the negative effects associated with it. From death and violence to distrust and bitterness, the aftermath leaves both sides more distraught and broken than before. He also shows how religion can be used to take advantage of vulnerable people and convince them to do anything.

That aside, the book is very captivating and enjoyable. It is well presented with very minimal spelling and grammatical errors. The author also ensures that the story remains unpredictable with twists and turns that will surprise you. On the other side however, it contains very harsh racial insults. Based on the above, I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.

In conclusion ,the book would suit most people apart from children. This is because of the complex plot of the story and also the harsh language used. Despite that, it is a great book that will give you insight into the systematic racism that is apparent in the United States. Grab yourself a copy and enjoy.
