Mixed Blessings by J.M Muse is a fictional novel which talks on racism and the challenges that it brings. The author shows us the difficulties that the Black, Hispanic and Asian people face because of their skin color, mostly discrimination and inferiority.

Mixed blessings has a lot of characters all living in different places but facing the same problem. Almost all the characters are being judged because of their color, which is their heritage. A character like Kimberly is treated differently by her classmates simply because she is a mixed race of American and Mexican. We have a character like Kublai khan who is a minister at Jeremiah's church. He preaches on racism, and how the black can be seen equally important as the white. Together with his advocate minister Hung Sung Suk from the Korean race they try to bring up a solution which has black men and Korean women getting married and bearing children of mixed race. Minister Dalton of the white race doesn't agree with this and takes some of his followers, and they try to sabotage the work that Kublai khan started but all does not go well.

One of the stories which was so emotional was that of Sidney and Jeremy. Two teenage best friends who were roughhousing until they were caught by police men and taken to jail. Sidney was treated brutally but unfortunately he was found hanging on the ceiling dead the next day, a conspiracy committed by the authority which was meant to protect him. Jeremy was treated better since his skin ton was a bit lighter than that of his best friend. This just shows how huge skin color impacts our society, and how people are treated for how they look.

The book has an irony, which was the naming of the characters (Ahmed -for a Christian character) which is unusual. Also the themes used in the novel where racism, hatred, love and death. The book was divided into chapters each taking us to different places and the struggles of each character. The book has a nice flow of events and a well written plot, it also did not seem to have any protagonist.

I'll rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was fun, educative and emotional at some parts. I relate to the book in every way possible since what was in it is something which happens in our day to day life. I am recommending the book to people who love drama and conspiracies.
