Review by imscube -- Mixed Blessings by J.M. Muse
Racial discrimination has been part of this world since the beginning J.M. Muse in Mixed Blessings has shared an in-depth analysis of the prejudice based on skin colours. The book not only imparts diversified discrimination based on the skin but also shapes up its extremist situation. Actually, the novel deals with the extreme hatred between the blacks and the white in America. The writer has used characters like Kimberly Solberg, Rachel Solberg and Kublai Khan, to outplay the entire story.
Racism is the center plot of the novel, and the entire story has been developed around it. The story revolves around Kimberly Solberg (a biracial child), Michael Kublai Khan (a minister), Hung Suk (the head of Korean church), and Tucker Dalton (a Pastor). Kim is a biracial child to Rachel Solberg (a Jewish American) and Hector Sanchez (a Mexican).
This becomes the biggest sin to her which she didn’t even commit. She has to suffer extreme racism and hatred due to her skin colour. The story takes the first turn when Kim has to shift in Mexico, in her father’s home. Her stepmother Magdalena makes her life miserable by pointing out at her colour and showing the superiority of the whites. She has huge difficulties in communicating with Juanita and Hermando, her half-siblings.
Soon the story discovers the major combat. Khan, the minister, has a plan to change the entire acknowledgement of the blacks and the whites. He wants every child born of a black father to be identified as a black. Hung Suk contributes to it, by introducing a completely new race to the nation by promoting weddings of Korean women and black men.
However, the story takes the thriller turn when Dalton stands against it. He has created a huge crowd of white Christian Soldiers to do anything to sojourn the biological outrage. Will he be able to stop this atrocity? Or Khan succeeds in this plan?
The writer has written the scene of discrimination with utmost care which helps you understand the pain of the victim. In addition, you can see how people use discrimination as a tool to take benefit of which. Moreover, the writer has a very sound story with an intact plotline. I was really happy to read the story; it took me to another dimension of racism. There were slight errors that can be ignored for such a novel and the little profanity was the demand of the story. Therefore, to such a good story, I will give 4 out of 4 stars. Well, this book would be a good read to everyone in general.
