White Monsoon was written by Scott Nelson. It is really two books intertwined together to tell the story. It is a crime thriller. The author states he was inspired to write this book by a National Geographic articles titled The Poppy-For Good and Evil.

The story starts off pretty much in the middle of intensity. Right away you read about a guy who finds himself waking up in a very dark, very cold place. This man has no idea what is going on except he is bleeding and can not see how bad. He realizes he is in a boxcar, he starts a fire and breaks free. Then he is woken up in a woman's house. You catch up with him many chapters later.

Then there are two men talking about how the one is going to kill the other one. You do not quite understand what is going on except you learn it is over money and heroin. Spear kills Barozzi down at the marina.

Next you read about Nimach, India which is the largest poppy growing country. There is an opium farm that a man named Nugendra. he grows opium legally. However, drug smugglers come to his farm to steal his opium. Nugendra goes to the government to tell them two wanted men came to his farm . They give him police protection and tell him he is lucky to be alive. This is because the two men are very dangerous drug smugglers.

In between these stories you read about a farm in Virginia with agents of the government where they have high tech technologies and also of people talking about smuggling drugs in North Africa.

You are taken back to the mysterious man who doesn't remember anything. The woman who helped him is named Malynda. She tells him that she lost her father to heroin and unfortunately her daughter as well when she grew up. She is afraid he will think she is addicted to heroin as well but she is not. Malynda falls in love with him, he suddenly remembers his name is Wilsie.

You are taken back to Nimach, India where there has been a shoot out. Also to the drug smugglers crossing Egypt.

Wilsie tells Malynda he is married to Jennifer and they have a three year old daughter and a baby due really soon. He remembers they were out on a walk then he does not remember anything else. He heard on T.V. a woman in the hospital, has a C-section baby abducted. This is what brought back his memory. He contacts police but the want to question him.

The story goes back and forth for quite awhile more, however, Wilsie ends up a hero being with Malynda and the kids.

I thought some of the stories within the book were intriguing and kept my attention well, but a few of the chapters were so full of technical information it was a little slow moving for me. But for a book centralized around the drug heroin it did a good job of having many strong characters in it. Overall I found it a nice read.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.

As the author, I loved this review. I wasn't sure if it was written for the 1st Edition or not. The latest version is the 1st Ed and it blends the two novels with their different time lines all the way through the book which makes the book an even more enjoyable read. Just wanted to say in passing that the oldest person to read the novel is 93 this year and the youngest was 11 for this PG-13 novel. I'm very thankful to all those who have read the book or who gave it as a present either as an E-book (Kindle or Nook) or as a trade paperback to their friends and family who are avid readers.
