Official Review: Gizmo and Ellen Mysteries

Post by sivienna »

[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Gizmo and Ellen Mysteries-The Case of the Missing Boy" by Eleonore Caron.]

Gizmo and Ellen Mysteries: The Case of The Missing Boy written by Eleonore Caron is a nice children book with good moral. It teaches children to help each other. The book is about the journey of Ellen and her dog, Gizmo, finding a missing boy. They are good at tracking things down because of Gizmo’s great sense of smell.

The first chapter introduces Ellen, her dog Gizmo and several cases they had solved. With some good pictures, the first chapter itself will be one good children book and I will easily give 4 of 4 star rating for the book. However, I think the first chapter is more suitable for age under 7, because the story is very light. I don’t think a real 10 years old girl will spend her day tracking a lost key or a bunny toy with her dog.

However, a 10 years old girl with a dog could have a quite interesting journey to find a missing person. The next chapters have a good story line. It is about a boy named Jimmy who went missing. Although it is a good story, it needs more words. I think 175 words per chapter are too short if the book aims children age 10 as the reader. Because the title is Gizmo and Ellen Mysteries, I think chapter about Ellen and Gizmo who went to search Jimmy should be more dominant.

I think it is more suitable for the parents to read the book to their children than the children read it themselves. If the author wants the children age 7 or younger to read the book, there should be more graphic. If it is for age 10 or above, it needs more words. The book now is somewhere in between.

I like the story. However, I have to give this book 2 out of 4 star rating because the story is too short. Without any picture in it, I assume this book is for children around 10 years old, just like the main character. I understand that this is a children book, but I believe they can handle a bit longer story.
