Review by Jocelyn Eastman -- The Date Farm by Jack Winnick
The Date Farm, by Jack Winnick, is the fourth installment of the Uri Levin and Lara Edmond series. The beginning of The Date Farm shows the reader a married Uri and Lara living a peaceful farm life, only called into action as special agents when necessary. That call happens when a mall in Los Angeles suffers a massacre from a group of Islamic fundamentalists. As the investigation into the mall shooting is progressing, New York City is attacked. The targets are the Federal Reserve and the Chase Manhattan Bank buildings. What exactly the terrorists are after remains a mystery. Are they after gold? Will they escape? How far will Lara and Uri have to chase them to get back whatever precious metals were stolen?
This book was exceptionally well edited, and I couldn’t find any mistakes during my read-through. The book also had no explicit sexual scenes, and no dirty language. The book does have violence and violent content. There is also a lot of talk about weapons in the book.
The thing I like most was the non-stop action. It was difficult to put this book down and I was almost always engaged while reading it. Whether it was during the terrorist attacks that were happening, or the undercover work, it was always action packed. There were a lot of plot points that I wasn’t expecting to happen. There were twists and turns that were foreshadowed, but it was always presented in a way that the plot could go in a different direction. It was always very interesting.
The thing I disliked most were the times where the terrorists were travelling. I imagine that it is difficult to write about any multi-day voyage while making it interesting, but I just found most of this section of the book quite boring. There were some parts that were needed so that the reader knew what was going on, but I felt that most of it could have been condensed quite a bit. Maybe others who read this will feel differently. It felt out of place in a book so filled with action.
Overall, I loved this book. Having read another of this author’s work, I can easily say this is my favorite so far. This is definitely for any adult out there who likes action, adventure or getting back at the bad guy terrorists. This is a great introduction to the genre. That’s why I give this book 4 out of 4 stars.
