Official Review: Destiny by Danielle Forbes
Destiny, by Danielle Forbes, is a work of fiction about a love story gone wrong. Destiny is a beautiful girl who is the product of rape. Her mother, Maureen, was raped by her own mother’s boyfriend when she was a teenager. Due to her religion, Maureen chooses to keep Destiny and vows to raise her as a woman of God. She does everything she can to keep Destiny safe, but Destiny falls in love with Romeo, a dangerous young man from the wrong part of town. As the two become desperate for money, Destiny’s life spirals out of control.
The part of the book I liked most was the mother-daughter relationship between Maureen and Destiny. Even though they didn’t always see eye to eye, it was clear they loved each other. Maureen wanted nothing but the best for Destiny and resorted to tough love, kicking her out when she was seventeen years old. But, Maureen missed her and worried about her the whole time she was gone. Destiny acted like a rebellious teenager, but she recognized Maureen was a good mother. She knew her mother gave up a lot for her and hated seeing Maureen struggle. Destiny even thought to herself, “...if she ever had the opportunity to make money to help her mom that she would grab that opportunity by any means necessary.” I think that’s why Destiny becomes so desperate when she’s with Romeo, as well.
What I disliked most about the book was how unrealistic some parts were. Without going into too much detail and ruining the story, the fact that two young people like Destiny and Romeo would be successful at the way they made money didn’t seem realistic to me. Also, at one point, Romeo wanted Destiny to become a prostitute to make money and she didn’t even protest. It didn’t make sense that she wouldn’t put up even a bit of a fight because in other cases, she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind.
I think this book would appeal to those who enjoy a quick read and like books about overcoming adversity. Those who don’t believe in God most likely wouldn’t enjoy this book. Religion is referred to constantly. Maureen is extremely religious and often prays to find answers and receive guidance. Also, this book is best suited for adults because it involves mature topics like rape and death.
I would rate Destiny 3 out of 4 stars. I wouldn’t give it any lower because I couldn’t put the book down. I wanted to find out what happened to all the characters. I wouldn’t give it a 4, though, due to the unrealistic parts mentioned earlier.
Destiny was a fast-paced page-turner. Although I did notice some errors, they didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book and it appeared to be professionally edited. I recommend this book to those who would enjoy a Bonnie and Clyde type of story!
