Review by Twylla -- The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare
Kevin Lane was sentenced to serve seven years for manslaughter in Magilligan Prison. On his first and only night in prison, he decided to take a shower. Thomas (“The Hulk”) McStravick and a companion attacked Kevin with the intent to rape him; however, in the struggle, Kevin fell against the shower wall and struck his head. McStravick and his cohort panicked and ran away leaving Kevin’s bleeding body on the shower floor. The guard on duty had left his post to use the facilities, but he neglected to ask anyone to cover for him. A few minutes later, he found Kevin’s dead body in the shower.
The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare tells the story of a series of four related murders. All of the victims were killed in a very specific manner. Sergeant Denise Stewart discovered a blog on the Dark Web that described each one of the murders immediately after it occurred. The Serious Crimes Unit led by Chief Inspector Sheehan expertly navigated the winding path of well-camouflaged clues to identify the killer. The Chief led his team of detectives through the meticulous process of identifying the facts and investigating every lead. The Chief warned his crew, “You start focussing on ideas before you have the evidence and soon you’re twisting whatever evidence comes in to fit the ideas. Road to nowhere.”
I liked the way I could almost visualize the thought patterns coming together in Inspector Sheehan’s mind as the investigation moved forward. It was interesting to watch members of the Serious Crimes Unit expertly interview the suspects, drawing out information that was not willingly surrendered. As the pieces fell into place, it was like watching a magnificent jigsaw puzzle finally take shape. The epilogue was very inspired.
I liked the glossary of the Police Service of Northern Ireland Acronyms and the list of characters in the book. These two lists were extremely valuable.
The British spelling of words grabbed my attention during the story. I looked up several words to determine if they were misspelled, or if they were just an alternate British spelling. I didn’t find any actual errors. It was well written and professionally edited.
The storyline did not move at a quick pace, but it was steadily interesting from beginning to end. I read the book in one day. I couldn’t go to sleep without finishing it. I enjoyed the time I spent with Sergeant Stewart, Inspector Sheehan, and Detective McCullough.
The Dark Web Murders is one of the best murder mysteries I have ever read. I am giving this book an enthusiastic rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Brian O’Hare is one of my new favorite authors. I would recommend this book to adults who love a good murder mystery. Be aware that this book contains violence and references to deviant sexual acts.
