Duplicity by Fin C. Gray is the story of Daniel and his father, Tom, told in the intertwining and parallel narrative of the flashback and flash forward sequence that hold unexpected twists and heart-wrenching cliffhangers at the end of every chapter. This is more than your typical story of the estranged father and son. It is the story of love and pain and the bitter reality that we must live with a little more of one than the other.

The story reveals the two sides of this father and son’s falling out in a dramatic climax that leads to their separate demise. It starts with the prologue of a terrorist bombing attack that foreshadows the ending, followed by the traumatizing childhood of Daniel and the selfish and destructive nature of Tom. Their happy household is shaken by the news that Alison, Tom’s wife, was slowly dying from cancer. Tom’s decision not to tell the children of it enrages Daniel even after Alison’s death. It is later revealed that Daniel already knew about his father’s sins and takes it against Tom to hate him even more. As the family moves to a new house and Tom living a new life, Daniel decides to break away from his sister and father to live in a place of his own. In the years to come, while Tom tries to reach out to his son, Daniel carves his own path that will ultimately be the double-edged blade that will be his death and salvation.

This book was excellently written, and I loved it so much. It was a roller coaster to read as it plays with all the emotions; from drama, suspense and the bitter aftertaste of a romance! I found myself very affected by what was happening to the characters, that’s how you know how well it was written. The story was fantastically plotted out, even when readers could expect what was going to happen, the author still managed to surprise and impress with his execution and style of narration. Gray’s attention to detail and symbolism is well noted, his research did not fail him for his portrayal of the Muslim extremist characters.

I highly recommend this book with a 4 out of 4 rating as I enjoy stories with intelligent and profound premises outside their immediate plot themes. I enjoyed it a lot because it had me really hooked from beginning to end, and the satisfaction of having no plot holes just takes the cake for me. I also liked the story for its themes of love and worship, it gives one a lot to think about when you reach the end: it makes you wonder why the characters were where they would end up in. The book was professionally edited, but of course with its themes of sex, alcohol and drug use, you would expect a lot of profanity. I would not recommend this for very young readers. If you are a reader who wants to see a bit of drama and suspense tied beautifully with great narration and plot structure, Duplicity is definitely the book for you.
