Review by Rosemary Okoko -- Mixed Blessings by J.M. Muse
According to Minister Kublai Khan of The House of Jeremiah Temples, the United States of America is ruled by Whites because there is a general belief that the population of whites is more than that of blacks. Census is under way and the question of race is becoming difficult to answer as there is the emergence of the mixed race that he believes should identify with the blacks. Kublai is determined to see the United States of America get taken over by blacks. He calls this black dominance, the new Babylon. In order to achieve this, the population of blacks must increase. Other pastors who support his view arrange for young girls from Korea to be brought to the United States of America so that the black men in Kublai’s temple can ‘plant seeds’ in them to increase the population of the mixed race whose babies he calls the Mocha babies. This must happen before the next census. Will the white pastor, Dalton, of the Christian Convent Church, who hates blacks with a passion derail course? The answer is found in the book, Mixed Blessings by J. M Muse. The book has about 320 pages and falls in the fiction genre.
Minister Kublai’s plan is what I liked the most in this book. It was interesting that the Korean girls actually arrived in the United States of America and the black men of his temple were made to have a mass wedding with these girls after they were paired up without being given a chance to get acquainted with one another. He observed the divine requirement that couples needed to wed before getting babies. These men were later made to relinquish their paternal rights. Minister Kublai had a birth facility ready for the Mocha babies.
The extent of pastor Dalton’s hatred for blacks is what I did not like the most in this book. Minister Kublai was his main rival in the ministry and he was ready to do anything to fight him. We see blacks lose their lives because the ones who wear hoodies are without doubt associated with crime whether guilty or not. The killing of a black teenage boy by the police and the sparing of the life of his black friend Jeremy who would easily pass for a white teenager leads to the hashtag, ‘blacklikejeremy’ that goes viral.
I came across only two errors in this book and they were too minor to detract from the reading. I liked the characters in this book and with the story flowing as it did, I cannot deny it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I would not rate it lower because the author did a good job.
I recommend this book to adults. This book teaches us that we should not chose how we will treat people, based on their skin color. Regardless of race, all should receive fair treatment. This book contains mild erotic content.
