Review by Tan TR -- The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare
The brutal murder of Judge Neeson leads Inspector Sheehan into a huge case, where bodies keep appearing regularly. It seems to be a psychopath on a mission for revenge. The secrets that cover this case make it almost impossible for the police to connect the dots. However, Sheehan is always attentive to details. But will that be enough? They are pressed for time and seem to be completely lost.
With countless suspects to consider, Sheehan’s team doesn't even know where to begin. It is Sheehan's silent personality that makes great contrast to the loud and aggressive personality of some of his team members. With a smart, narcissistic psychopath on the loose, the team finds their biggest clue: the serial killer’s blog. A blog with every entry correlating to a specific murder, all in gory detail.
The story starts off with a mere glimpse on what awaits the reader, which made me want to continue reading. And I appreciated the third person used throughout the book, which concentrated on different characters, giving you the whole scope of the story.
The Dark Web Murders escalates in a steady pace. I found myself at the edge of my seat constantly. Brian O’Hare paints a beautifully complex puzzle that gives you the stress and frustration of a good-old mystery with the satisfaction of finally connecting all the pieces. Furthermore, the author’s way of writing creates a good rhythm, and with an extensive vocabulary it is able to give a deeper perspective into the story.
Jim Sheehan and his team are well-established characters that you get to know and like. They feel like real people, trying to do their jobs and save lives. In addition to all that, the author ends the story with a big twist that left me more than surprised. The story had very familiar aspects of any normal crime novel, yet it still felt new and exciting.
Taking into consideration everything mentioned before, I could not find anything that I disliked about this book. It was professionally edited, except some minor punctuation mistakes that did not distract from the story. I had to give this book a four out of four stars.
I would definitely recommend this book to all readers that appreciate a good crime novel, a mystery or even a thrilling story. However, because of the gory details of the murders and other acts throughout the book, I do not consider it apt for younger readers.
All in all, I truly enjoyed the adventure this book took me on.
