Official Review: Deeds: Gods from Men by ES Wesley
Deeds: Gods from Men is an episodic series of adventure novels by ES Wesley which I feel fit into the genre of "spy" or "conspiracy" thrillers, though it is difficult to peg this work to one genre. The version offered for review on the Online Bookclub was an omnibus edition of all the published novels to date (which are available separately on Amazon and other platforms). Because of the sheer volume of work this took me a little longer than anticipated to read and review, for which I apologise to the author who has no doubt been waiting patiently for my review!
The novel centres on the efforts of Nick Teague engaged in an epic battle of wits against the sinister Mr Deeds. The theme of this series is a justice/vengeance pursuit of the father of a murdered daughter, and of the just cop pitting his wits against a criminal mastermind of a protector who is wracked by the guilt of catastrophic failure to protect.
Nick, an accomplished, maverick CIA agent, deals with the aftermath of his daughter's murder at the hands of the terrifying Quiet Cell - a terrorist organisation with sinister and anarchistic motivation, Wracked with guilt at his failure to protect his daughter Amanda, Nick sets out on a mission to put a stop to Mr Deeds and everything he represents, pitting his wits against a formidable criminal intelligence.
I'm not going to reveal too much about the plot here because I don't want to spoil the experience for readers. Suffice it to sayI really enjoyed this saga. The author effortlessly blends the moods of Taken, the Borne Identity and Smilie's People for a thrilling roller-coaster ride that will not disappoint. The books are presented well, have clearly been well-edited and it is rare to read such well-produced independent fiction. What I especially loved was the clear effort made by the author to provide the reader with a pleasurable reading experience, and in a "blind" test I would not have known this work was self -published. Wesley's writing is proof that independent authors can produce work which can rival the big guns in publishing.
Both plot and characterisation are very well done, with a terrifying villain and a complex hero who is at times ambiguous and very human. I felt the procedural side of these novels could have been better researched and was lacking realism in some places, but this is a minor quibble. These books are packed tight with adventure, plot twists and mystery. There's an interesting and addictive backstory immersed in political intrigue. In short, everything you could want from a conspiracy-type thriller. I would love to see this series dramatised for film or television and would recommend HBO take a look at this series for their "next big thing". I'll definitely be reading more from this author. Very, very well done indeed, and I'll definitely be reading more from this author.
If reviewing this on a five-star system, this would get four out of five stars, and on OnlineBookclub's system this gets the "full four". Brilliant.
