[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "A Love To Die For" by Sreejan Guha Niyogi.]

A love story with a hint of mystery and a twist at the end, this book makes for a good light reading. It leaves you a little woeful in spite of a conventionally happy ending but does capture your interest till the last page.

Anand, a writer geek is a quiet Bengali boy with few friends and a routine life of hating college. Asha is his best friend since childhood and is considered their daughter-in-law by Anand’s parents. She is a social girl and loves making up stories. When a vivacious and wealthy girl, Nili captures Anand’s interest and falls in love with him, life changes for him. He experiences passions unknown to him, becomes a hot topic in college, Asha and Nili gel up together and all three friends have loads of fun together. But everything turns upside down for them after a trail of threatening phone calls, accidents and murder attempts cloud their fairy tale life.

Suspicion and jealousy desecrate the environment and against the backdrop of elections in Kolkata, Anand struggles with turmoil inside and outside to find the truth even though it may not be what he expects or wishes.

The author tries to make simple events melodramatic while the ending drama feels a bit drab. At places the plot does not look very convincing but overall the story connects up everything well at the end. The description of characters is a tad brief and therefore does not really make you empathize with them. I liked the tone of the book which combines different emotions of various characters. The book is written in the male protagonist’s first voice which I did not find very suitable and would have enjoyed the mystery part more had it been in third voice.

On the whole, I would give the book 2 out of 4 rating. It cannot be termed as a literary genius or a marvelous romantic thriller but it is short fiction story with some emotive moments and stirring incidents that make it a good read for a relaxed rainy day.
