Official Review: Second Chances by George Lee MIller
Private eye Nick Fischer doles out vigilante-style justice in the action-packed second book in the Nick Fischer series.
Nick’s downtime at his late grandfather's ranch is interrupted when a local teenage girl goes missing. Still recovering from a bullet wound, courtesy of his last case, Nick sets out to track down Maya and bring her home.
Nick trails Maya from the small town of Fredericksburg where she was last seen to San Antonio. His investigation leads him to a lowlife who calls himself Dragon, a seemingly charismatic but ruthless thug and sex trafficker who preys on runaways. Once in his clutches, his victims disappear without a trace. It appears Maya may have fallen for his charms.
With the local authorities not taking the case seriously, Nick decides to take matters into his own hands. Determined to rescue Maya or die trying, Nick sets out to dismantle and expose the Dragon’s organized crime ring by any means necessary. Will Nick bring Maya home, or is he embarking on a reckless suicide mission?
Second Chances by George Lee Miller is a captivating thriller that takes you on an incredibly action-packed edge-of-your-seat ride. As the second book in the series, Nick’s backstory included ample references to the first book. Nevertheless, the book can be enjoyed as a standalone as the references only served to elevate the quality of the story. From the writing to the dialogue to the plot structure, the delivery was impeccable. The story picks up quickly with a steady pace that gradually increases in momentum as the story develops. The characters were well developed, with adequate backstories that enhanced their relatability.
One of my favorite characters was Kelly Hoffman. Kelly was a former Marine Corps officer and Nick’s love interest. I like when strong female characters are well represented in a book, and Kelly could certainly hold her own. She was confident and far savvier than Nick and would have been an invaluable addition to his team. I was not surprised by the way things turned out between them. I hope I get to see more of her in subsequent books in the series.
Second Chances was exceptionally well-written and appeared professionally edited as I could hardly spot more than one typographical error. Consequently, I gladly rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book contains strong language as well as a few erotic and grisly scenes, making it unsuitable for children. This enthralling novel took me less time to finish than I expected, and I look forward to reading more of the author’s work. I recommend Second Chances to readers of private investigator mysteries and fast-paced crime thrillers.
