‘’So, we have a dead judge who has been partying with another judge, a law professor, a couple of property millionaires, a prominent surgeon, a well-known barrister, a socialite and a playboy, a gambling machine tycoon, a media mogul, a top civil servant and a restaurateur.’’ The night before, judge Neeson (who is now dead) had hosted a small get-together where twelve new ‘’patrons’’ were to be initiated in ‘’The Club‘’.

Detective Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan is in charge of the case. He and his team try to find out who is behind the death of judge Trevor Neeson. The judge, a man whose ‘’outside-of-work role was to act as a kind of broker for the seediest desires of the rich and famous.’’ As we go deeper into the story, more information is revealed, thus things constantly take different turns. DCI Sheehan’s partner, detective Denise Stewart has a hunch that she would find something about one of their suspects on the Dark Web. She stumbles upon a blog which describes the murder of someone. That someone is judge Neeson. The author of the blog, Nemein, a highly educated individual, talks about justice being served as they describe in gruesome detail what they did to end the judge's life. A ruthless and cold-hearted psychopath sees themselves not as a murderer but as an instrument of Nemesis, a punisher. The detectives are in a race against time to stop other murders from happening and catching the criminal.

Brian O’Hare begins the book with a prologue set on the 12th of August 2012, in Northern Ireland, when Kevin Lane, a very young man, is sentenced to serve time in prison. He is charged with manslaughter. He only lasted a day. The poor boy got attacked by two inmates in the prison shower, where they tried to rape him. In the struggle, they slipped, and the weights of the two men squashed Kevin’s head against the wall. Only after reading about 60% of the book I was able to make the connection with the prologue. That’s the only thing that confused me a little. Contrarily, my favourite thing about this beautifully written novel is how all the missing elements were tied up at the end. Although the team of detectives did their job amazingly, I particularly liked DCI Sheehan’s outlook on things and his inner monologues, which were somewhat funny at times.

I couldn’t stop reading The Dark Web Murders. I was so absorbed by the story that I finished it in one sitting. As far as I’m concerned, the writer has got a brilliant mind and through his excellent way of writing, he has created a great, gripping story from beginning to end. It is a remarkable book with lots of pace, lots of puzzles and fairly strange every so often.

As I have thoroughly savoured the novel and have found very few errors, I rate The Dark Web Murders 4 out of 4 stars. I must say that this book is for adults only. There are certain things that some might find distressing. The mention of paedophilia, sexual abuse, BDSM and slavery could trigger negative sentiments. But if you are able to digest these sorts of things, be assured that you will enjoy Brian O’Hare’s C/T/M novel.
