Review by Shelyce -- The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare
The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is the story of a murderous psychopath in Northern Ireland whose killings fall into the jurisdiction of Detective Chief Inspector Sheehan, a man known for his intuition and ease of success in solving criminal cases. The Chief Inspector, his Sergeant Denise Stewart and the rest of the team all work together to solve the killings of this highly intelligent serial killer. In the blog post found on the dark web, this diluted killer claims to be detached from their feelings and believes to, therefore not be a murderer. The killer’s philosophically dense rants explain how they are exerting their form of justice on the people who harmed the one they loved. The killer’s signature narcissism permeates the blog and helps Sheehan and the team get answers throughout their interviewing of both suspect and victim.
O’Hare knows how to sprinkle in clues to throw the reader off the scent without compromising or confusing the story and that clue dropping has to be my favorite thing about this novel. I couldn’t wait to turn the page so I could learn some more clues and make my next guess who the killer was. I noted that I guessed the killer four different times and none were correct! It is so much fun how the author quickly and effortlessly shifts the reader's focus chapter by chapter between the perverse and wealthy of Northern Ireland, the impressive work of the detectives and the unknown creeps of the dark web. I loved being propelled further and further into the world of Sheehan and the killer with each chapter.
I didn’t dislike anything in this novel, it was exceptional and I was truly surprised at how much fun I had reading it. However, I did find the similarity of some of the character's names as well as some of the police acronyms difficult to follow at times. Luckily, there is an easy-to-access glossary and introductory information at the beginning of the novel that had things clarified quickly.
This novel was written for a mature audience that likes a good intense crime mystery. It contains violence towards an animal, murder, rape, and mention of torture. If one can get past the gruesome nature of the crimes, the stories' intellectual twists and turns are sure to appeal to any reader. This novel was impeccably edited with no spelling or grammar mistakes this reader noticed.
I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars because It’s an expertly balanced story and I genuinely had fun reading it. This author paints some intricate and appalling crime scenes that still haven't left me. The police team is made up of some never-boring characters that have quick and funny banter. There is a little bit of everything. This author's writing really made an impact on me and that’s what I'm looking for in a great novel. I am looking forward to reading other titles by this author.
