Mixed Blessings written by J.M. Muse is a story about racism in the USA and its effects on different personalities within different situations. It tells about several characters from mixed races. It gives a message to those people who create discriminations and violence led by racism. The message is ‘Humanity is important than race and skin color. Spread Love than Hate all among us. Otherwise, the world will be destroyed.’

Though the story captures various characters, it revolves around four major characters: 1. Kim aka Kimberly aka JEWNIC, who is a daughter of a Mexican father and Jewish mother, 2. Star Matthews, a daughter of the African American father and Japanese mother, who rejects as a winner in a beauty pageant contest by the racist judges because of her race, 3. Michel Kublai Khan, the minister of the African American community who promotes the idea of mixed-race people, and 4. Pastor Tucker Dalton who is against nonwhite people and wants that the USA should be ruled by only white people.

The writer tells the engaging and hard-hitting story about racial inequality in the USA. The characters are real and relatable. Each character has a different perspective on things such as love, hate, race, skin color, life, culture, family, and politics. They own unique identities.

I like Kim and Star’s personalities. They are fierce and positive, want to be happy in every situation, and want to live the fullest life amidst racial chaos. They don’t believe racial discrimination. They struggle to make their identity despite their mixed-race personalities in difficult situations.

Another likable and positive character is Michel Kublai Khan. He is kind-hearted towards mixed-race people. He promotes an idea named ‘Mocha Effect’ suggested by Demographer Les Solomon. Kim or Kublai Khan, they are rays of hope amidst the hate spread by Dalton.

I disliked that there is too much violence due to racial confrontation. Dalton is racist. He wants that only white people should rule all over the world. His anger and hate are more poisonous factors than real poison. He is against Khan’s idea of creating the majority of mixed-race people.

I don’t like the ending of this book. It is a mixed ending. On one side, it shows happiness and hopes which lead towards the end of racial inequality, on the other hand, it shows a sad underlying against the real premise which promotes kindness towards the mixed-race communities.

I rate 4 out of 4 stars to it. Though it is a thought-provoking story, it has profanity and slur words. There are a few typos in the book.

I recommend this book to those readers who like to read hard-hitting, authentic books about racism.
