Review by vmi81 -- Final Notice by Van Fleisher
In a compelling read that offers a “what if” insight into the minds and actions of those given the gift of specifically knowing the last few days they have to live, Van Fleisher's Final Notice provides a thought-provoking opportunity for self-analysis to the reader. What if we were furnished with the option to know whether we only have up to 30 days left to live? How would we handle that information? Would we make final moral arrangements prior to our final day, would we fulfill our bucket list, or would we take advantage of the knowledge and take revenge on those who may have wronged us? Fleisher offers us the chance to experience several scenarios that answer the question, while challenging us to question our reactions.
Although some may consider this book to be included in the Science Fiction genre, with today's constant technological advances it is more so a work of almost realistic fiction. The book's VitalTech Industries is Beta testing a new sports watch that provides vital physical health analysis to the wearer, to include a setting that provides a 1 to 30 day “Final Notice” feature that informs the wearer of their impending death date. It is this specific and simple SiFi attribute that the reader needs to accept in order to continue into a read that will be difficult to put down.
Vince and Trudi Fuller are retired Baby Boomers who find themselves questioning the present-day political attitudes toward racism, white supremacy, immigration, and “fake news.” Weaving in the the highly influential anti-gun control stance the NRA espouses in it's political lobbying efforts, our protagonists are offered a special “Senior Discount” in order to promote purchasing of handguns to a rapidly aging segment of U.S. society. Although liberal-minded and not gun-toting, Vince and Trudi are none-the-less challenged to consider the offer after having experienced threatening circumstances... thus initiates a dilemma that becomes an ongoing and highly intriguing theme throughout the book.
Highly worthy of spending time with, Final Notice continues to draw the reader forward as tension builds and moral dilemmas are introduced, finally to be brought to an intriguing conclusion. One can't help but to wonder what comes next. Fortunately for the reader, the author has already written a sequel worthy of continuing the “ride” and conversation. Fans of this book will definitely wish to join the journey into the next book, Final Act.
Final Notice is not just a book primarily designed to entertain, although it meets that goal wonderfully, it is also written to spark conversation and a self-examination of our attitudes toward present-day leadership, the citizenry make-up of our nation, and to the potentially dangerous lobbying efforts of highly influential organizations. A forewarning: the reader of this book needs to be open-minded and willing to consider potential differing points of view in order to truly draw the most benefit from the read. It is for these reasons that I rate this book with a solid 4 out of 4 stars.
