The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is a mystery and crime adult novel set in North Ireland. It is the fourth installment in The Inspector Sheehan Mysteries series, although this book can be read standalone. Jim Sheehan is a Chief Inspector that has extensive experience in solving murder crimes. This time, he is called to investigate the murder of the famous Judge Trevor Neeson. While he and his team are investigating Neeson’s death, new murders occur.

The murders have similar patterns, so it looks like they were perpetrated by the same murderer. The killer seems to leave no clues at the crime scenes. However, detective Stewart discovers that the murderer has published blogs on the “Dark Web”, in which he details the way he carries out the murders. The killer calls himself or herself “Nemein”.

The “Dark Web” is a dangerous part of the whole web that has information about all kinds of atrocities such as homicides, pedophilia, extreme pornography, drug markets, and others. This so-called “Dark Web” has a high level of technological protection that makes it almost impossible for authorities to track people who post information there. Therefore, Nemein has no qualms about recounting his actions on his blogs, allowing detectives to create a psychological profile of him and to get some useful clues to their investigation.

Police researches lead detectives to discover the existence of an expensive and perverted club in which they offer sexual services including pedophilia, sadomasochism, and other deviant activities that are outside the law. Both the victims and the killer appear to be related to that club.

At the beginning of the book, the author adds a list of characters, which I consider very helpful to follow the plot since there are many characters, especially detectives, each of whom has different traits and personalities. Also, O’Hare appends a glossary of terms and acronyms to facilitate reading for those who may not be familiar with them.

The author cleverly uses various resources to capture and hold readers’ attention such as creating expectations, adding several hypotheses, and mentioning possible clues. At all times, O’Hare maintains a considerable group of suspects. This was one of the features that I liked the most since, as the plot progressed, curiosity remained about who the killer might be. The analysis carried out by the detectives, the sequence of actions, and the dialogues were always intriguing, credible, and fluid.

Beyond the murders, the author walks through disturbing topics such as pedophilia, kidnapping, rape, among others. He also exposes the issue of the abuse of power of wealthy people and the possibility of influencing the judicial system. Another interesting topic that O’Hare touches is that of the "Dark Web", which represents a dangerous site given its content and the difficulties for the police to trace it.

At the ending, the loose threads are closed and the questions the readers ask during the development of the plot are answered logically.

There was nothing I disliked about The Dark Web Murders. It kept me immersed in reading from start to finish. The edition was adequate, although I found a few typos most of them misspelled words that do not bother the concentration on reading at all. For all that said, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to people who like the crime and mystery genre. This novel is not suitable for young people because it deals with disturbing themes already mentioned.
