Official Review: Nefarious by Steven F Freeman
Nefarious is a book written by Steven Freeman puts all its' focus on the war against terror in Afaghanistan. The main character in this book is Alton who enjoys himself fighting in the field and taking down terrorists. The book starts when Capt. Blackwell is hiding in car while he is being pursued by American security forces. The author then takes us back to the cause of this controversy.
While in their mobile communications van in Afaghanistan, the soldiers are visited by an unidentified man who comes to drop off lunch for one of the soldiers. Unfortunately, this lunch turns out to be a major dramatic reversal in Alton's career - some of his battalion members lose their lives and he himself has his leg injured- For a man who had been proud of his work, this event turns out to create a challenge in his ability to look after a family he has always loved with a lot of dedication.
As a result of this event, Alton has to be moved to a desk job -one that he hates- as he recovers from his injuries. At his new job, he easily adapts to cracking coded messages that are being shared between the terrorists but this is not an easy thing for him to do because he loves the field yet at the same time he works for a person who needs to be promoted and will do anything possible to break Alton. At the same time, he has to accept the fact that some of his friends died on that unfortunate day and must prepare himself for a 'physical' that could determine whether he goes back to the field or he'll be dismissed from the army.
Alton finds it difficult to sit at a desk but it is the only job he has. After a going through great difficulty, he manages to make new friends in his new place of employment though he still feels like there's something missing in his life. In his hard time at this place, he ends up falling in love with Mallory but he is not sure whether she will love him back with his injury. This silent love causes him so much pain each time the two of them talk especially whenever she feels sorry for him or sympathizes with him.
In another story running concurrently in the novel, Finch goes out with his son Sean in the forest where Finch's son is bitten by a raccoon. Finch tries to clean his son's wound in a bid to prevent him from getting rabies but when they reach the hospital, he is told that his attempts could easily have killed Sean. Out of fear, he decides to come up with a vaccine that can be used to prevent rabies. Finch goes through hills and valleys to create a vaccine but this is not an easy process and it looks like their tests are bound to fail but he will not give up.
When Alton receives a phone call from an old friend whom he (Alton) finds out to have died that very night, Alton has to work very hard to discover what the cause of death of his old friend as he does not believe the official report that is made. These events bring about an unexpected twist that brings different friends together in a bid to resolve this mystery.
With these two stories going on concurrently, the author draws the reader into the challenges of being a soldier who is trying to gain his or her past glory in the field while in the same breath we are taken into the pains of making a vaccine. Even if there are profits from making the vaccine, the process is really gruesome and very demanding.
I liked reading this book because the author takes the reader into all these challenges by people in these fields and you begin to realize that life is not as easy as we may think for people in 'uniforms or coats'. The choice of words in the book made me relate with the characters in this novel. This personal feel about the book makes it a book worth reading for you go through events with these characters as though it is happening to you.
I really do not have anything negative to say about this book except that in some instances i could not tell whether the author was using pidgin English or they were just spelling errors. Anybody who is interested in warfare would love this book. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
