Review by samantha07 -- Duplicity by Fin C Gray
Duplicity by Fin C. Gray is a realistic, and captivating thriller following the story of Daniel. Daniel was a young man who went through a lot; first, he was assaulted as a child; then he lost his mother a few years later; he finally watched his father go into deep dark despair. This is also a novel that explores difficult and dark themes of society, like betrayal, drug abuse, and terrorism.
The book opens with Daniel McIntyre embarking on a mission that will unleash terror in London, kill innocent people, and change his life and many others forever. The author continues the novel with multiple flashbacks that add to the story seamlessly. In the flashbacks, we see an ordinary family, with typical parents who just want to provide a good life for their children. However, later on, a series of disastrous events occur, first debts start piling for Tom McIntyre, then his career is in free fall, and finally, his wife Alison who has given him her unwavering support leaves him. Meanwhile, Daniel, an innocent and promising son, changes drastically and has his innocence stripped when he explores the lorry park. The aftermath of this series of events is one of many unexpected twists.
One thing I liked about this book was the character development of Daniel and Tom. For example, the author starts with Daniel being just an innocent little kid, but then slowly dives into his twisted mind. The author can show us how twisted a mind can be after suffering years of abuse, and by doing this the author also allows us to connect with Daniel’s mind and reflect upon ourselves.
Another attribute of the book I liked was the way the author explored difficult themes in society. The major themes that I noticed were: drug abuse, homosexuality, and religion. In a way the book enlightened me on things that were going around in our everyday lives; I think the book truly showed me that many people struggle to find their place in the world, and are suffering the way the characters of the book are.
Duplicity is an excellent thriller that was extremely well-edited however I do not encourage all audiences to read this book. The book has foul language, inappropriate scenes, and extreme violence. Therefore, I only recommend this book to older and more mature audiences.
Duplicity is one of the best thrillers I have ever read, and there was nothing I disliked about it, therefore I give Duplicity a 4 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed my experience with this book, as the plot is top-notch, and the characters are very compelling.
