Review by crisanja -- Minor Arcana by Jerry Lambert
Minor Arcana by Jerry Lambert is the second book in The Dark Emeralds series. It can be read as a stand alone book as well. Georganne is struggling to rebuild her design business and reputation with her best friend Tom, after surviving a horrific event a year ago. She receives a job offer from a famous but mysterious and handsome conductor/musician to design one of the ancient houses in New Orleans. There’s enough flashback information that I never felt lost regarding the events of the first book. There are elements of the supernatural and witchcraft. This is the second book in the series and it seems that we should expect more from this universe as Georganne is still just learning about her gifts and powers.
I really enjoyed this book and plan on reading the first one too. This book has intrigue, mystery, supernatural elements, with a thread of romance woven through it. I really liked the use of chapter titles as clever short phrases that had double meanings for the content of the chapter. For example, the chapter titled Split Ends is about someone’s hair but also about a rift between a couple of the characters. The use of flashbacks to illustrate the history of the houses as well as the emeralds was a very clever storytelling tool. The story was gripping and kept me guessing. The end was a grand culmination of the story with most of the ends woven in. I can’t wait to see where the next book takes me.
There wasn’t anything about this book that I didn’t like. There were a lot of characters to keep track of and how they related to the main character. However it wasn’t a drawback for me, it kept the story interesting. There were a few punctuation errors such as missing close quotation marks, but aside from that it felt professionally edited.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I found it interesting, intriguing, mysterious, and suspenseful. The romance subplot was not overbearing to the overall story and developed naturally between the characters. The mystery kept me guessing until the reveal. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.
I think anyone with an interest in the occult and who loves a good mystery would enjoy this book. It does have mature themes and it would be more suited to a mature audience that is ok with reading scenes of a sexual nature. The romance scenes are tastefully done and never felt raunchy to me, but there are a few in the book. If you don’t feel comfortable with that, then this book probably isn’t for you.
