Review by Charlie girl -- The Date Farm by Jack Winnick
“The object of terrorism is terrorism. The object of oppression is oppression. The object of torture is torture. The object of murder is murder. The object of power is power. Now, do you begin to understand me?” These were the words of George Orwell that kept ringing in my head as I was reading through The Date Farm, an international thriller novel, written by Jack Winnick.
The Date Farm is a story about Uri Levin and his wife, Lara Edmond. Uri is a Mossad agent while his wife is an FBI special agent. The couples were on a family vacation in Ohio when they were called upon by the secret service agent after a brutal assault by some terrorists in Beverly Hills. This incident resulted in the loss of 58 people, with 125 people injured. As the story unfolds, several earlier attacks are launched by the terrorist at different locations. One would no doubt give applause to how the terrorists planned their mission attacks. There are guesses that the Iranian government sponsors the terrorists, how true can this be? Find out more in this action-packed novel.
Though The Date Farm is the fourth book in the Lara and Uri series fiction, it is a stand-alone book because I understood the whole storyline without having to read the previous series. Considering the characters, the author made sure the minor and major characters were well-developed. My favorite character is Lara, because I enjoyed the role she played in Chapter 11. She led her team to a vault at the Chase Manhattan Bank to face the terrorists. As a woman, her act of leadership and bravery was second to none.
One other aspect of the story that I liked is how the author made this series hard to turn down. I admired the skillful integration of flashbacks because it added to the development of the characters. It is quite a suspenseful international thriller novel. There was no dull moment from the mind-boggling plots between the terrorist groups and the federal agencies. There were also some remarkable handful of other characters in the novel like Tom, Sheikh, and others.
I will say that I walked away from this novel with a new-found mentality toward agencies and terrorists. It would be unjust to deduct a star from this exciting novel. I enjoyed every bit of the book. Also, the book is flawless because it is well-edited. Therefore, I rate The Date Farm 4 out of 4 stars, and I recommend it for readers interested in wars and terrorists, especially action enthusiasts.
