Review by elisabethkuhn -- E M P Honeymoon
In Dorothy May Mercer's E M P Honeymoon, newlyweds Kelly and Tom Turbulo are spending their honeymoon on a Honduran Island. During a shopping trip, Kelly stumbles across a hidden terrorist lab and only narrowly escapes capture. With that, Kelly and Tom find themselves in the middle of an international adventure that has wide-ranging ramifications for the survival of the world.
The prologue takes us right into the middle of the action as Senator Mike McBride gets a mysterious phone call from a very frightened Kelly, his younger sister. She has discovered something awful and is scared for her life. From there, the action flips back and forth from scene to scene, including Tom and Kelly's honeymoon villa on the beach, the store where she's made that awful discovery, other island locations, McBride's office, and increasingly the various locations on the other side of the globe.
As it turns out, Dear Leader (DL), the Chairman of the Homeland, is planning to destroy the United States and Canada with a new type of nuclear device. As the story unfolds, Tom and Kelly try to find out what's going on and how they can stop it. They are surprisingly well connected and are getting various kinds of help.
Meanwhile, DL is working towards developing and then deploying the device that could bring nuclear winter to North America. His is a brutal regime, and while the violence is not described in too much explicit detail, there are enough specifics, implied and otherwise, that reading about them made me cringe.
In the meantime, DL has set up two teams, one of which is deployed to the same Honduran Island where Kelly and Tom are spending their honeymoon and where the story unfolds.
What kind of a story is it? It's not really a romantic story, in spite of the honeymoon theme, although there are a few tender moments. There is even a secondary romantic development between Steve, a CIA "hunk" and Sharon, one of the two female protectors flown in to help keep Kelly and Tom safe.
The author, Dorothy May Mercer, kept the developing relationship subtle, with a touch of sexiness, humor, and flirty repartees. However, there are no sexual scenes or even kissing (except for the honeymooners), although there are some subtle references to the physical attraction between Tom and Kelly, as well as between Steve and Sharon. There's also no profanity, unless you count one mention of the word "doo doo." The focus is really on action, i.e., the solving of the mystery, and saving the world.
Is it science fiction? Well, most of it is actually based on facts, though there are a few technological developments that are still in the future.
As the story unfolds, the stakes get higher and higher. The action includes the President of the United States, the newly formed Space Force, and efforts to save the world from the nuclear warhead that's been deployed to destroy North America. The action flips back and forth between the various scenes in the U.S., the Homeland, and the Honduran Island.
I really enjoyed the story. The main characters on the American side, including the honeymooners, were very likable. The main supporting cast was well developed as well, and as they all worked together, it was fun to read about their progress and their evolving relationships. In fact, that was my favorite part of the book.
On the other hand, I strongly disliked DL, the villain. His brutality totally turned me off. My least favorite part of the book was the brutality, spelled out, implied, or threatened by DL and his minions.
The book was professionally edited. I had a couple of quibbles with comma placement but didn't find any typos or grammatical errors. Because of that as well as the well-developed storyline and characters, I'm giving the book a rating of four out of four stars.
I would recommend Dorothy May Mercer's EMP Honeymoon to young adult as well as adult readers who enjoy fast-paced adventure stories with technology and a touch of sci-fi, along with well-developed characters.
