Review by Essyshiroh96 -- Waves Break (on Unknown Shores)
Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) is an interesting novel by Barry Litherland. It is a story that revolves around a group of friends, who have known each other since their childhood. It is narrated by Phil who is the protagonist.
As the story begins, we are introduced to Phil and Wayne in their adulthood. Their friendship is a complicated one. They are bound together by a tragic event that happened during their childhood. It is an unforgettable event that continues to impact on their lives differently. Unfortunately, Wayne is arrested in connection to a crime that takes place at Oldfield’s residence. As a good friend, Phil decides to help his friend. Using his skills as a journalist, Phil decides to investigate and uncover the person responsible for the crime. Little did he know that this would put his life in danger. He starts receiving threats from some people who seem to be looking for a particular file. However, Phil is not shaken by these threats. He becomes more determined to discover the secret surrounding this mysterious file.
The pacing of this book is fast, yet the author manages to incorporate the fundamental details and characterization. I believe this is one of the best accomplishments any author would like to achieve. The author’s choice to compose this book in the first-person perspective also seems to be a good choice. I was able to see things more clearly from Phil’s perspective, and this enabled me to understand the events as they unfolded.
What I liked most about this book is character development. The characters are well-developed, each having a unique personality and a unique role to play in the story. For example, Wayne is portrayed as rash and unpredictable. However, he is still loyal and caring to his friends. I also liked the way the author skillfully weaves together the narration of events happening presently in Phil’s grown-up life, and the description of the past events that happened during his childhood.
What I disliked most about this book is the excessive use of profanity. It begins from the first page and continues throughout the book. Some people might not find this appealing. It would also not be suitable for young children.
After reading this book, I came to a conclusion that it was professionally edited. I therefore rate this book 4 out of 4 stars . I would like to recommend it to those people who like crime/mystery stories.
