Review by Gudamercy -- The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare
What connects a judge, a barrister, a criminal, and a layman? What do they have in common? These questions constantly plague Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan and his team. The Dark Web Murders is yet another book by Brian O’Hare that combines intrigue, thrill, and suspense. It thrusts the reader into a world of crime, investigations, forensics, and the brutality of human nature. The smart, experienced, and intuitive Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan and his team are bewildered and rattled by a series of bizarre and symbolic murders. The team usually has its share of insane cases and perpetrators, but this case will test their resolve and will force them to think outside the proverbial box.
The killer only referred to as Nemein is calculating, meticulous, and diabolical. He sees himself as an avenger and one who serves true justice. His intelligence manifests in his philosophical arguments as he writes an extensive account of his murders, which he posts on his blog on the dark web. His reasons for killing are clear in his mind while at the same time vague to Sheehan and his team. The brutal murders also reveal evil secrets and deeds of the wealthy elite in the society, leaving the team horrified by the depth of human cruelty and sense of entitlement.
Brian O’Hare accurately describes the unusual crime scenes, forensics, deep web, and the principal characters to exquisite details. The characters are also diverse and of unique attributes such as McNeill who is a stammer, but still respected and an expert in his work. The author also highlights some of the challenges faced in an officer’s line of work, such as the romance between colleagues as well as a work-life balance. Additionally, there is evidence of good research, since the scenes described are realistic and further enhance the reading experience. The philosophical arguments and justifications in the book are also sound and, therefore, immerse the reader into conflict as to whether they justify the murders or not.
I found nothing to dislike about the book. It is exceptional and keeps the reader on edge throughout the entire read. However, the author has described some repulsive and upsetting scenes in gruesome details. Nevertheless, this is necessary as it completes the storyline. It would also be ideal for the author to number the pages. The element I loved most is the separation of Nemein’s story from the other characters; this creates two different and equally captivating stories that are running concurrently. There are also occasional glimpses into the personal lives of the characters, giving an authentic feel to the read.
The author has done an efficient job of editing the book. The whole book will have you on edge, trying to figure out who Nemein is and what is his story. Just like the detectives, you will also be asking the questions, noticing the minute details, and taking guesses as to who Nemein is. You will even question the assumption that he is male. Ultimately, the first chapter will beautifully complete the last chapter and lead to astounding revelations and a somewhat happy conclusion. I gladly give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend The Dark Web Murders to those who love a good crime novel and with inquisitive minds.
