Review by Jnancie -- The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare
The Serious Crimes Unit of the Northern Ireland Police department is the best of the best at tackling hard core crime, and to-date they have brought to book some of the worst offenders the city has ever seen. One could even say that they have stared as far down the rabbit hole as it goes. However, when a new wave of grotesque murders hits Northern Ireland´s powerful elite, the resultant investigation pits the sharp, intuitive wits of team leader, Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan against his toughest foe to date. Led on a twisted journey of discovery into the deceit, corruption and indulgence of absolute power, Sheehan must beat the dark web in order to outwit the evil genius of the city´s latest serial killer before he deals Northern Ireland its greatest blow.
Brian O´Hare´s mystery novel The Dark Web Murders is the fourth book in the Inspector Sheehan mystery series. It shines a light on the brazen entitlement of unbridled power and its negative impact on the city of Northern Ireland. As Sheehan and his team delve into the psyche of the mysterious, sophisticated dark web blogger, Nemein, it becomes apparent that the past and present are strongly and irrevocably intertwined.
One of the many things I loved about this novel was the exquisitely vivid narration of scenes. I was drawn in right from the opening lines of the prologue, ¨It was a soft prison, he had been told. Medium security overall, with low security accommodation for selected prisoners. His friend had tried to sound cheerful but the concern in his eyes was inescapable.¨ As the plot thickened around every carefully molded character, my fear of not being able to bond with the main characters who had obviously evolved over three installations, was effectively tucked away. I was able to follow the thrilling, fast paced plot, which kept me guessing from start to finish.
I would recommend it to fans with a penchant for a good mystery. While there is no overt sex scene, there are several occurrences of sexual content, explicit language and violence. Therefore it is best suited to an adult audience.
Overall, the editing on this book was smart and thorough. I found the cover in itself quite dramatic and intriguing. I also felt that the choice of dates as chapter-breaks cleverly ramped up the pace of the plot and added even more urgency to the thrill brought on by the author´s brilliant, expansive imagination. The only down side to the experience is the absence of page numbers, so I would encourage the author to resolve that issue. I rate this book a solid 4 out of 4 stars because it is a solid read that will be extremely difficult for any reader to put down.
