Review by anua24060 -- The Dark Web Murders by Brian O'Hare
The Dark Web Murders is a crime thriller by Brian O’Hare. It is the fourth book in the Sheehan series. The story follows the investigation of gruesome serial killings by a killer who loves to post the details and the reasons behind his killings in the Dark Web in classic literature style. The Dark Web is a part of the internet where criminals and people with various perversions come together to share their interests and get their illegal activities done. The first victim of the serial killings is an esteemed judge who has organized a party the night before he is murdered.
The case is taken up by the Serious Crimes Department headed by the chief inspector Jim Sheehan. The team comprises intelligent and versatile detectives. As the team investigates eccentric and powerful people about the judge’s murder, another three murders by the same killer pressures the team and confuses them even more.
The book is a perfect crime thriller with clues thrown in between lines so readers can try along with the team to find who the murderer is. The serial killer is an interesting character with his love for classical literature. The writer throws light into the twisted mind of the serial killer, which makes the readers understand why he did what he did. The psychopathic killer’s character interests those who love psychological thrillers.
The main character Jim Sheehan is an enjoyable and admirable character with his intelligence and dry humor. The remaining members of the team have a distinguished personality each which makes the characters real and complex. Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone with no confusion.
The thing I liked most about the book is the gripping style in which it is written. The plot is very good. A glossary is added at the beginning of the book to avoid confusion on abbreviations and new terms. The author has been very detailed and informative about the police and clinical terms used in the book. The parts about the dark web and serial killer’s blog have been very interesting. The book is very finely edited with no grammatical errors.
There is not much I disliked about this book. But in some parts of the book very rich and classical style vocabulary is used, which can be difficult for an average reader to understand without consulting a dictionary. But the usage of that vocabulary is essential for the plot of the story and cannot be quoted as negative.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of its gripping plot, fine editing and thrilling narrative. I recommend this book to everyone who loves crime thrillers and mysteries. I am looking forward to reading more from Brian O’Hare about investigations of Jim Sheehan and his team.
