Review by Simonmuthee26 -- Mixed Blessings by J.M. Muse
Mixed Blessings by J.M. Muse is an interesting and fascinating combination of story lines of People from different walks of life in South California, who are often discriminated for being a mixed race or from a minority race.
Kimberly isn’t sure of how to describe her race, her father is Mexican and the mom is Jewish. She calls herself a white girl from the Valley. To quench her quest of finding her roots, she travels to Mexico to meet her father. Coming back to America, her best friends cannot stomach her quest, they label her JEWNIC. Minister Kublai Khan sat in the Management and Budget Census Working Group. He saw this as an opportunity for his community to become wealthy and powerful. With the help of Les Solomon, Khan analyzes the situation in America: Race is a key factor in politics, education, and the quality of life. The minority groups in the country- Blacks, Hispanic, Latinos and Indians, always got less opportunities. To improve their lives, their numbers had to increase. From Les' algorithms and numbers the Minister was convinced that it was possible to make America a Majority-Minority Nation. What he called the Mocha Effect. In collaboration with Reverend Hung from the Word Energy Church Sanctuary, they set up Birth Camps with the ‘able assistance’ of their faithful followers. However as Khan is implementing his strategy, there is Pastor Dalton who believed in white man supremacy. Dalton believed that the white race had to be preserved. He sets up the Christian Soldiers Army to deal with Khan and his likes.
The plot and setting of the book are great. The book switches from one story line to another white without losing the reader, this kept me at the edge chapter after chapter. Also the book has numerous conversations between different characters and employs a third persona narration. From the vivid descriptions and conversations, personal traits, beliefs and stands of the characters have been brought out. For instance, Pastor Dalton continuously uses racists’ remarks, even in a televised interview, demeaning Blacks and mixed race people.
More also the book depicted the tough paths the minority goes through. Young black men are killed or imprisoned without following the due course of the law, as was the case with Sidney. Furthermore, you may be the best but from the look of your skin color, hair type or hair texture, no win for you.
The book was professionally written and edited. It contains very few grammatical and formatting error. Kudos to the author and the editors. I loved the way the author portrayed the gullibility and vulnerability created by religion. Followers of the ‘men of God’ cannot question or critically analyze the solutions and views from their spiritual leaders. They just follow, bringing to success the selfish agendas and ambitions of their leaders. The dominant themes include: race and identity, family, racism, wealth and ambitions.
I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. It was a great read. I recommend it to the entire human race.
