I read the book Blinders by Michael Amon which I give 4 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed this book. The cover and blurb caught my eye first and I'm glad I read it. The storyline and plot were something I've never seen before. The characters were all unique and described quite well. I found myself rooting for the main character. I also found myself fascinated, waiting to find out what would happen next.

The book tells of a wine expert named Trilby who used to enter wine tasting competitions. He comes across an average guy who knows his wine and soon Trilby sees him as a way to get back into the game. The wine competitions are treated as gambling and similar to poker tournaments only way classier and upbeat. The author Michael Amon is a certified sommelier who knows his wines and it definitely shows in this book. The descriptions of wine and the lavish fashion and lifestyles of characters are also in immense detail. These two things really kept me interested throughout the book.

The one thing I didn't like was the massive amount of swears in the book. There were 233 swears and since there's 296 pages that's about one swear per page. Given the characters and the content of the book as sort of a wine noir, I feel the language is appropriate but perhaps not to a high extent. While I did not care for so many swears I do feel they helped express the style of the book. I also feel that my distaste for the swears shouldn't impact my rating of the book. There were a few typos but no big grammar issues as I made sure to look out for them. Aside from the swearing and sometimes graphic situations I found the book to be profoundly interesting.

The book reminded me of the movies The Hustler and The Color of Money which I believe the author describes the book being like in his blurb. I pictured the main character Trilby as Paul Newman because of this. The character he mentors, Bobby reminded me of Lenny from, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The book using wine as a dangerous business is quite different. It made me want to keep reading as I found myself entertained, impressed and in suspense after almost every page. I'd label it as a pulp fiction, crime fiction and even a gangster novel in its own weird way. I've truly never come across a book like it before so it certainly exceeded my expectations.

If you're into wine then this book is 110% for you. If you like fast paced action, raise the stakes adventure and under the radar crime thrillers then you'll love this book for everything it is and more. However, if you don't like swears in books or over the top characters with a taste for the crime life then I don't recommend this book. I would also like to note that this book had a few graphic sexual innuendos, language and undertones that I didn't care for but again aside from this and the language I really enjoyed this book. I don't recommend this book if those types of things bother you and take you out of a story. Other than that If you liked all of the above things in this paragraph then you should definitely give Blinders by Michael Amon a read.
