Review by The_Book_Lover_2003 -- The Dark Web Murders
I have always had a soft spot for crime thrillers so when I stumbled upon The Dark Web Murders written by Brian O’Hare, I read it immediately.
The book tells the story of a team of investigators trying to find and capture a murderer, who has been killing people in the most brutal way and posting these information on the Dark Web under the form of a blog. Before providing the readers with details describing the murders, the murderer always takes time discussing philosophical matters. It’s like the killer is using these discussions to justify for his actions. The investigators, along with the readers will be led through many twists and turns, through mysteries and darkness, until the book reveals who is actually the Dark Web Murderer.
I had a grand time reading this thrilling book, I couldn’t put it down even for a second. The book keeps you guessing till the very end.
Because the story dealt with crime scenes and the police department in Northern Ireland, I was afraid I couldn’t understand much of the terms being thrown around or what was going on, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I was wrong. Though dealing with complex issues, Brian O’Hare explains everything in such a simple way that even a person with no former knowledge of crime can sit down and have a good time. There wasn’t a moment reading the book that I had felt confused, which was a big plus for me.
The story has a dark tone, which is normal considering we’re reading a crime thriller, but even though the atmosphere surrounding the murder is eerie and depressing, the characters that we get to know, who are involved in the investigation, always lighten up the mood. The dialogues between the investigators, between Chief Inspector Sheehan and his colleagues were funny and I found myself laughing out loud to a lot of the jokes told by these characters. The story lets you get close to the people in the investigation team, often switching between different perspectives and even letting you slip into the characters’ home lives.
Brian O’Hare really has a talent for describing the environment in which these characters are inhabiting. You can vividly form the image in your head about the characters’ actions and surroundings as you read along the lines. The author is also good at stirring up your emotions such as frustration, anger and joy. When the investigators are frustrated with each other for taking too long to give out information, the author makes sure you feel the same by making the words and lines longer. You really feel like you’re right there, taking part in the action.
Swear words are present in the book but they are few and far between. You have to go through a few pages just to find someone swearing, and when they do swear, it is usually to express their anger and frustration.
I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. It was professionally edited and has just a few errors. I enjoyed it a lot, and can’t wait to read it again. This book is perfect for anyone searching for a crime murder and mystery to immerse themselves into. It is also perfect for people who are just starting out reading crime thrillers.
