The Date Farm by John Winnick is the fourth installment of his action series, exploring the professional and personal lives of married agents Lara and Uri. In this action-packed thriller, a terrorist attack in a Californian mall, resulting in massive casualties, draws the newlyweds away from vacation and propels them into their dangerous day jobs to investigate who did it and why.

Fortunately, you do not to have read the previous three books to understand what is happening in this one as the narrator provides supplemental background on the main and side characters, the terrorist groups, and relevant government agencies. Winnick’s book was well edited, possessing no obvious typos. Another positive feature of the book is the lack of grammar errors. I found myself invested in the story with each passing day because it flowed at an appropriate pace, nor was it dull on any of the details. Additionally, on a scale of 0-5 on erotic scenes, this book was a 0. There are a few instances of profanity, with one character on p. 56 saying “Damn.”

As a fan of action thrillers, this book appealed to me from the beginning. If you are also an admirer of such a genre, or an avid fan of espionage-related literature, then this enthralling book will entertain you just as it did for me. What I liked most about the book is the dynamics between Lara and Uri. While they are not your average couple, the intimacy between them is endearing. Even though they are from different government agencies, their love for each other surpassed possible obstacles, making the relationship work. I especially liked how Winnick does not characterize Lara as incompetent or inferior compared to her husband, Uri. She impresses me with her fortitude, intellect, and aptitude, which he illustrates via her skills as an FBI agent.

But what I disliked the most is the stereotypical portrayal of Middle Eastern people as terrorists, an albeit outdated trope. While I understand this book is inspired by the author’s personal military experience, I feel it is too racially insensitive, especially during these intense political times. However, do not let this personal bias dissuade you from reading and enjoying the book.

Overall, I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars because it was exceptionally well-written, entertaining, and kept me on the edge of my seat, anticipating what will befall on our heroes next.
