Review by Davinasmith18 -- The Date Farm by Jack Winnick
The Date Farm, by Jack Winnick will put you in the front seat on an incredible journey. The story is realistic and the photographic detail is sure to engage all of your senses. The action never ends, so Lara and Uri’s work is never done. From the beginning, the action escalates to a bloody and horrific act of terrorism. The reader is thrown directly into a terrorist plot that kills several hundred young people at a rave concert in a Beverly Hills shopping mall. A few weeks later, a huge attack in New York requires Lara and Uri’s expertise. What ensues is a fast paced, suspenseful journey, as Laura and Uri embark on a mission to track down the groups responsible for the terrorist attacks.
What I love about the story are the characters. I love that Lara and Uri work together both in marriage and in their professions. They understand and respect each other’s commitment and drive in their careers. They equally share the belief that despite their new status as a married couple, rest and relaxation must wait. Their relationship is portrayed as strong and passionate, yet balanced, with a unique ability to separate business from pleasure and remain professional.
What I love most about Lara is she is portrayed as unapologetically successful, smart, and strong. She is never willing to allow herself to get in the way of mission success. On one occasion, her partner Ross assumes an in-charge role. When he calls out commands, the men on the team nod in confirmation, but Lara returns an icy stare. Despite her feelings, Lara did not fight it, instead she said to herself “The main thing now is to get rolling in a purposeful fashion”. She refused to let her ego jeopardize a mission. I was elated that later Ross “clearly accepted Lara as the leader” of the rescue team and the rest of the men recognized her as the leader as well.
Another thing I really loved about the story is the eloquent descriptions. On several occasions I found the discussions thought provoking and it piqued my curiosity about fact versus fiction. I really enjoyed the discussion on the air defense systems as well.
There was nothing I did not like and I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys realistic thrillers, intelligence operations and military technology. I would recommend for readers 17 and older due to violence and mild sexual content. I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars because over all, I did not want to stop reading it.
