The Inspector Sheehan Mysteries Book Four The Dark Web Murders is the fourth book in the Inspector Sheehan Mysteries, a series written by Bryan O’Hare. In this installment, Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan, and his group of dedicated detectives are confronted with a depraved group of individuals whose degeneracy is completely unspeakable. The Fulfilment of Enlightenment Club is a private club whose membership includes movers and shakers from all over the world and cost the fortune to join. But membership has its privileges if one is interested in perversions of the most despicable type.

The book begins with a young man named Kevin Lane. He is being moved to Magilligan Prison for a crime to which we are not made privy. Kevin is a small, blue-eyed, blond young man and is instantly the target of some very bad men. His story is the true heart of the book.

Meet Judge Trevor Neeson, tall, well-manicured, 70ish year old man with a dark secret. Judge Neeson is the broker for the Fulfilment of Enlightenment Club. He fulfills the requests, for a price, for the most perverted individuals. He is also being blackmailed by someone who allegedly has pictures of him in compromising sexual situations with young men. Judge Neeson is desperate to protect his image as a well-known member of the Appellate Court. His judicial assistant, Edgar Doran, is helping him with the hand-off which is not completed because the blackmailer does not show. Doran is also the person who finds the body of Judge Neeson the following morning. Neeson had been bashed in the head and had a foreign object inserted into his rectum. Yikes!

Sheehan and his team begin a journey that leads into the dark world of those who have no conscience, who have no empathy for others. Before long, the detectives discover a blog on the dark web. The blogger provides details of Judge Neeson's murder but does not name him specifically. The detectives are skeptical of the reasoning the blogger gives for the murder. The blog is distinctive by its formal, archaic style and the detectives are suspicious of the blog styling. The detectives are stumped as the murders continue and the evidence leads nowhere. After each murder, the blogger provides more information and reasoning.

I liked the book. O’Hare writes a straight-forward crime mystery. His characters are well-developed and believable. Be prepared, there are a lot of characters! O’Hare provided a list of names and brief descriptions of the detectives, the bad guys, and all the other characters in the book. He also provided a glossary of acronyms for Northern Ireland Police Service. It was helpful!

The Dark Web Murders provided technical information about the dark web. I am not familiar with the dark web. so it was very useful. I did decide the dark web was somewhere I never want to be because it provides access to some very disturbing things.

I rated the book 4 stars out of 4 stars because I like a good crime mystery. I liked the story line even though the bad guys were so repugnant. I guess bad guys are supposed to be bad, right? Staying mindful of different characters, especially the detective team, was often confusing but O’Hare has written strong characters with quite distinctive personalities, so it became easier as the story continued. Each detective brought something to the table; each one was important to the story line. I liked that each team member had a back-story brought forward from an earlier book. It made the book even more interesting.

This book is worth reading. I will probably go back and read the first three. I would like to know more about the detective team.
