With just about the most bizarre plot, Demon Freaks is a thrilling, funny young adult novel, and a sure favourite for anyone interested in being amused and anxious at the same time.

The story follows Ron and Bing Slaughter, typical teenagers who have upcoming exams, and the success of their punk rock band to worry about.

With their SAT’s scheduled for the next day, the twin brothers decide to go studying in a friend’s cabin, but the night, as well as their perceptions of normalcy, turns sour when a vindictive, and quite possessed History teacher comes crashing through the door.

Suddenly, the boys find themselves caught in the crosshairs of evil golfers and another faction of occultists. And when members of their band are kidnapped, Ron and Bing become ensnared in a mission to save their friends, sabotage a demon-summoning ritual and still make enough time to sit for their exams the next morning.

Written by J.R.R.R (Jim) Hardison, Demon Freaks is an absolutely fun book that pulled off being hilarious and serious at the same time, making for a pretty unique read. The story picks up shortly after the novel begins, and from then, it’s a straight shot to the climax. The pleasantly weird plot only gets weirder as the night progresses, and it was amusing to observe the characters try to adapt to these changes.

Despite being focused on serious topics like summoning demons, and world domination – that is, in fact, sarcasm, the dark humour was never too far behind the action, and I especially enjoyed the writing style of the author. Paired with commendable editing, the narrative was quite neat and thus flowed very smoothly. The fast-paced plot was carried by enjoyable characters, and even the mostly bumbling antagonists were difficult not to like.

In terms of negatives, nothing comes to mind. The story had a sort of old movie feel to it, and I wouldn’t be surprised to find this onscreen someday. But until then, I recommend this to any fan of young adult, fantasy, action, or just generally crazy humour.

It’s a definite four out of four for me, and if you’re interested I don’t doubt you’ll find a similar conclusion.

There was very little use of expletives and everything else was quite mild as it goes for young adult novels, therefore this is suitable for pretty much all readers.

I hope you enjoy.
