I have to admit: The Dark Web Murders by Brian O’Hare is a great piece of work that kept my attention through every single page.

I give the book 4 out of 4 stars for a very simple reason. The story that the author describes is very believable, as it mirrors part of what our society has become very well, with sex abuse, and depravity towards more innocent people by those who are considered well respected classes with overfilled wallets.

The book is the fourth in the Inspector Sheehan murders series, but it can totally stand out by itself.

Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan and his team are investigating a series of signature murders all connected to each other and orchestrated by a narcissistic psychopathic individual who kills in a sadistic way, with some rapes, and torture details.

But, the surprising and somehow disturbing issue is that the killer, who calls himself Nemein, posts all what he has done in details on a blog in the Dark Web. Then, he tries to justify his actions using philosophical justification, defining himself not as a murderer, but rather as a punisher who is emotionally detached from his killings. In the philosophical paragraphs, Nemesis, with his strong views on topics such as punishment, vengeance, and satisfaction, is trying to explain the righteousness of his actions as a justification of his dark side as a human being. And this, in my opinion, gave the juiciness to the story, making it even more worthwhile reading.

One of his blog’s posts says: “Imagine if someone causes irreparable harm to someone you love. Would you seek revenge? Would you rely on the justice system? Think before you answer. If we had a perfect justice system that meted out consistent punishments, there might be a case for patience. But, is not that a huge IF? Would you leave the aggressor’s fate to the Lord, or would you exact an eye for an eye here on earth? [ … ] Philosophy is objective. Suffering is subjective. Philosophy simply examines ideas. Suffering is real. And when the right to vengeance is denied, there comes great outrage and a deep-seated infuriation that cries to heaven for action. And I have answered that cry for action. It took time. It took patience.”

During the investigation, many secrets are revealed, such as the so called The Club, where rich people gathered to satisfy their perverted sexual tastes and desires with a menu and a list of prices for several “activities”, such as any kind of sex, young boys, pre-teens, children, and black mass orgies with human sacrifice.

I was hooked up from the beginning of the story, thanks to the author’s writing, which is quite impressive. It flows very well, getting the reader right to the point. I think that one of the aspects that amazed me the most is the depth dialogue among the team members which is very realistic and totally engaging. Moreover, I guess this particular approach also helped the author develop the characters successfully.

The only complex part of the book was, indeed, the number of characters to remember. There are really many, but the author’s writing style doesn’t get the reader lost or bored.

Overall, the book is easy to read. I strongly recommend it to anybody who likes murder mysteries.
